I see this all over Twitter today. Can someone explain to me what happened.
Some fella had to tell the ref something before he did it is what I’ve gathered so far
Seven offensive players have to line up on the line of scrimmage before the snap. You can only have 5 offensive linemen and they are not eligible to receive a pass - sometimes teams will take out a receiver and bring in a sixth lineman when close to the goal line or in short yardage situations - typically called a jumbo set/package. Whoever the sixth lineman on the play is has to report as an eligible receiver and can catch a pass if needs be.
Lions run a lot of these jumbo sets and skipper (70) was the eligible receiver on all previous attempts, but for this play, Decker (68) reported as the eligible receiver - ref was in autopilot though and despite the huge numbers emblazoned in the jerseys assumed it was 70.
Lions execute a perfect play and complete the 2 point play to take the lead only for the refs to deem it illegal due to their own incompetence.
The ref, Brad Allen has a history of making bone headed errors late in big games
