@croppy_boy I’ve been out of the loop lately but what’s going on in Denver? Why Hire a DC as HC and let Philips walk? Would it not have made more sense to get kyle shanahan in as HC and attempt to keep the status quo on the D side?
EDIT I’ve just read Mike McCoy is in as OC. The whole thing makes more sense now. Great appointment.
The last team would have been the Cleveland Browns becoming the Baltimore Ravens. Cleveland were subsequently readmitted as an expansion franchise but retained the old team’s history and records. The Oilers moved to Memphis in 1997 and played as the Tennessee Oilers for a couple of seasons before settling in Nashville as the Titans.
Ironically the last move of teams that retained the same franchise model was both L.A. teams in 1994 - the Rams moving to St. Louis and the Raiders returning to Oakland.
To be honest with you I was in the Shanahan camp in the initial aftermath of Kubiak’s announcement. Joseph just missed out on the job the last time out though so Elway clearly saw something in him that impressed. They’re pointing to his leadership qualities and management techniques as the facet that got him over the line on this,
He has an interesting background as a player. A QB in High school and a back up QB in college he played as a CB for two seasons in the NFL as well, a poor one by his own admission. He had close ties to the Denver organisation as well from his time in Colorado University.
Sad to see Wade go but just about any DC could do a good job with what he’s left behind. A couple of run stuffers is the only need there really. Bringing back McCoy is a great coup. He had a great stint last time. As OC in 2011 his rush attack, led by McGahee and Tebow was the best in the NFL and then he had a couple of seasons working with Peyton as well.
Lots to hope for now, decent amount of cap space, $39m I think, and no big contracts to sort out means they can start the reorganisation of the O Line and bring in some help for the rush defense.
I’m expecting them to bring in Romo as well. Elway likes doing as much as possible to stay in win now mode and it would make sense depending on the asking price.
