SuperBowl XLIX- The Dusty Path to Phoenix, Arizona

o_O

pointless post of the day…

If divisions were based on geographical location.

Was 2013 the first year that two teams that used to be in the same Division faced off in the Superbowl?

Yes and it can only ever happen again if Seattle are involved as they’re the only team to have moved conference since the 1970 merger.

Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Baltimore went from the NFL to the AFC back then and Superbowl III is the only matchup that can never be repeated as the Jets and Colts now share the same conference.

As predicted on these pages it looks like Michael Bennett will be chasing the money, and who could blame him. He has performed at a staggeringly high level the last two seasons and deserves a monster contract, I doubt Seattle will have the cap space to accommodate him.

Telling article about his thoughts here from the Seattle Times, also interesting to hear his thoughts on Michael Sam and what will happen to him in the NFL…

[*]Absolutely fascinating rumour being reported on Pro Football Talk. The Cleveland Browns were apparently very close to trading with the San Francisco 49ers for, wait for it, Jim Harbaugh!!!

Rumours have been swirling around for a while that relations between Niners GM Trent Baalke and the abrasive head coach are at a very low point. Harbaugh was rumoured to be interested in going back to college football and taking the Texas gig and now this bombshell. Interesting off season in the San Fran methinks.

The Combine is in full flow in Indianapolis now, excellent link via nfl.com here…

Offensive Linemen and Tight Ends are going through the drills today. Early headlines have been made by Auburn T Greg Robinson who blazed the 40 in 4.84 and is a lock to go in the top 5 and could even go second overall. Michigan’s Taylor Lewan also ran a very fast 40 in 4.84 and his stock has risen.

The bad news is that most of the top QBs in the class won’t be going through throwing drills. Of the top 5 or so expected to be taken only UCF’s Blake Bortles will be throwing. Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater is the latest to say he won’t be throwing joining Johnny Manziel and Derek Carr in sitting it out.

No no no my friend!

In fairness, most of the top tier QB prospects never throw till their pro day, especially since Big Ben’s meltdown in the 2004 Combine

And didn’t Cam throw poorly but still got picked #1 anyway (probably partly based on my strong recommendations on here).

I thought this year would be different. #1 spot is still wide open and kudos to Bortles for taking the gamble, he still has an outside shot at going first. He is certainly impressing the draftniks there today.

Sitting at workout & impressed as hell by timing Blake Bortles is showing with strange receivers…has a lot of teams in attendance buzzing.

AJ McCarron decided to throw in the end and after a shaky start eventually impressed. I doubt it will be enough to move him into the first round though. Was surprised Derek Carr didn’t throw. I’d have his ceiling at Minnesota with the #8 pick and I doubt he’ll go higher after not throwing, he could slide down to the second half of the first. Johnny Manziel was unsurprisingly the fastest QB in the 40.

The WRs making the headlines with their measurements were Texas A+M’s Mike Evans and Florida State’s Kelvin Benjamin. Both should go in the top 20, wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Evans went in the top 10. Rutgers WR Brandon Coleman came in at 6 foot 6 and ran a very impressive 40. Someone will fall in love with this guy’s upside and take him at the end of the first. Clemson WR Sammy Watkins ran the fastest 40 as he blazed home in 4:43 and will almost certainly be the first WR off the board.

I would imagine Marquise Lee will go before Evans, he’s a more rounded prospect and doesn’t have the hands issue he has. Also, Brandin Cooks ran faster than Watkins with a 4.30, Mayock reckons this could push him into the first round.

I think your mixing up Evans with Benjamin with the hand issues, but I take you point. I would have had Lee ahead of Benjamin all day long, but a sluggish 40 coupled with a lacklustre season has seen his stock plummet. It wouldn’t surprise me if he fell into the second, this class is loaded at WR.

Cooks is a player I’ve seen many times and it wouldn’t surprise me if he crept into the first. I doubt Seattle will take him as he’s too similar to what we’ve got, Coleman really intrigues me and he is certainly on our radar.

Any players tickle your fancy for the Chargers?

http://mweb.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/24454752/video-johnny-manziel-vs-49ers-qb-colin-kaepernick-in-the-40

If we address any area other than CB in round 1 I will be surprised as it is such a huge weakness on the team. Obviously I’d love if Darqueze Dennard was still there when we pick, but I don’t see that happening as someone is bound to go CB before 25. Outside of him, Gilbert from Okhlahoma St would be a good pick, but any of the top level CBs would be grand except Roby who I think will be a bust.
There’s been talk that the Chargers are very interested in Louis Nix if he’s still available, so if DT is what Telesco is thinking the Timmy Jernigan wouldn’t be a bad option.
The O-Line still needs a bit more work, and the pass rush still isn’t up to scratch but these can be adequately addressed later on. I also think this might be the year to get our future QB. It’s a deep class, and Philip Rivers might only have 3 or so years of good production left (not to mention the Chuckles situation at backup), so if we got someone like Smith, Murray or Garoppolo in Rd 4. He could sit for a few years then take the reigns.

The story cannot be denied now. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam confirmed they were in negotiations with the Niners to get Harbaugh. It looks like relations between the HC and the Niners GM have broken down and only a Super Bowl victory will keep Harbaugh in San Fran.

Miami have apparently joined the chase too and this looks like it will be Harbaugh’s last season there. It will be an extraordinary fuck up by the Niners if they allow him to walk at the end of the season when his contract is up after he has guided them to the last 3 NFC championship games and came within a geehair of winning the Super Bowl.

Mike Vick to the Jets?

I’m not opposed to this.

Clowney, faster than Kaepernick and Newton.
6’ 5", 19st. Ridiculous.

Clowney vs Cam vs Kaepernick
