Sweden v Ireland & Ireland v Austria - International Football Double Header

best post ever

Says the man who goes into the Gaelic Footballl threads to express his man love everytime Tyrone or Armagh win a game.

I have no interest in a “my dick is bigger that your” discussion about soccer and Gaelic. I played both and loved playing them. I prefer Gaelic and it’s culture. You pretend to be from another country, but occasionally when it suits you suddenly become Irish again. Grow up fella, you should probably spend more time out being active and actually playing sport to truly understand it rather than becoming another obesity statistic.

Get a life.

Kev that’s clearly not true. Who are these talented players we have that aren’t getting picked? Maybe one or two of our players would get in their team. They have a better first choice eleven and far more depth than us.

It doesn’t mean we can’t get a result against them, as was proven on Friday night, but Sweden are a level above us anyway, they qualify for most tournaments and will be expected to be at the next World Cup.

They have alot of very ordinary players. Yes they are more suc essful but I think it’s fair to say they are far far more organized and disciplined. I agree a draw there is a decent result, no doubt but they would probably ( at least till very recent times) think the same about us.

We are only getting talented players like McCarthy and Coleman into the team now, should have happened way back. Both played very well the other night.
Gibson and Ireland are two players who could add an awful lot to Ireland. They are not there for varying reasons. Is it fair to say Sweeden are selecting the best available to them, I daresay they are.

Ireland issues seem to be mostly in defense though and in bad need of a dominant centre half which doesn’t seem to be appearing. How is Shane Duffy at Everton rated?

There is an old football saying of “play the ball, not the man” and I think you should pay heed to it, it makes you look underhand and very bitter in these debates. It is usually employed in football terms to when someone is too good to stop legitimately that another unethical route is taken and I think your reliance on switching to personal attacks are indicant of this. I believe I can’t add anything more to the point I made earlier on why we shouldn’t be contrasting two converse sports as it neither aids or furthers the debate and if you can’t supply me with valid counter-arguments then it’s better to be quiet and not make yourself look so bitter and agenda-driven.

As for your point on my physical shape, I am a picture of health. I am lean and athletic and regularly get complimented by ladies on my tall, lean and athletic physique and I abhor fat and beefy people. So it’s best not to take random guesses as it might make you look uncontrolled and envious.

I realize you jumped passed reading the posts and jumped in to attack myself, but the debate is really only ever been about the Irish National team and the FAI. Rock brought up the GAA, I pointed out in this case the analogy is irrelivant and doesn’t work.

I don’t care if you think I’m bitter or whatever fella, unlike you I don’t crave validation from a bunch of aliases on a website.

But carry on, it’s fun when you Hang yourself on here.

Stephen Ireland? Ah come on. He’s completely frozen out at Aston Villa and burned his bridges with a series of managers. He’s also not very good anymore as evidenced by the fact he isn’t even a sub for a very mediocre relegation-threatened team.

Gibson would be a decent option to have but I can’t work out why he’s still refusing to play. It’s fairly sickening to see players effectively going on strike because they weren’t happy at not being picked. And Gibson would have been a debatable call either way at the Euros and did have his opportunities in the past. He’s coming across as a bit of an arrogant wanker these days but the opportunity is still there for him to play.

If he came back and we got a few more seasons out of Andrews and Whelan to add to McCarthy and Hendricks we might start to have a reasonable enough midfield again. We do have options up front, though we’ll badly miss Robbie’s goals when he retires. Brady, Pilkington and Coleman will give us options on the wing with McGeady so you’re right - it’s defenders (and a goalkeeper) where we’re struggling. Centre backs take a long time to mature usually so Clark and Duffy may become decent options in the future. Duffy isn’t playing much for Everton at the moment but he’s captain of the Irish Under 21s and certainly looks like he’ll be a prospect. O’Shea is an impostor, O’Dea has never let us down but he’s not really international class - same goes for McShane though he did have a few horror shows in an Irish shirt.

there isnt a discussion to be had

one is a proper sport played and loved by hundreds of millions- the other is a shitey made up farm sport played by 1000s - I cant undertsand how in anyway that in a thread about sport we are discussing bogball

I read the posts and asked why football is being contrasted with GAA as it should not be - then you got very hot under the collar and started making unrelated yet not very flattering observations of me, ignoring the subject matter. You would need to have a vivid imagination, be paranoid and be very creative at storytelling to believe I launched a personal attack on you. I asked a question and you got very flighty and insulting. That is what happens. I would like the subject matter to stay on hand but two of my greatest personal traits would be my resilience and righteous endeavour so it will be tough for me to drop this with mistruths are being posted.

Ya have not seen very much of Duffy but heard a few reports of him from Scousers. Everton are pretty decent there but it would be good if he got in at a decent club like that rather than moving on.

Do you not think Gibson and Ireland have been poorly managed, or at the very least there should be a question of it. Ireland’s confidence has been shot for a while, but he had serious talent and someone must ne able to het it out of him.

I suspect sometimes players view themselves as better than so and so at club level and struggle to understand why that Player is ahead of them at Int. Either way Gibson should take it on the chin, but I suppose after all the flak him and McLean have taken to play for us they might actually start thinking the hard work was over once the politics died down.

People talk about our pick being small and all, an it is, but really it is bigger than just the 26 counties when you consider the amount of Scottish, English & NI born people who would declare fir us.

Any plans the FAI may be implementing though would take 10-15 years to really come to fruition, 2 generations really.

I thought Kacanaklic was their best player the other night - certainly more effective than Zlatan. He was to be fair aided by the fact he was playing the left wing for Sweden & Walters was non-existent and left Coleman dealing with Kacanaklic & Safari at times.

He’s a young player loaned out to Burnley by Fulham. Rather surprisingly too as he has had decent showings in the EPL prior to his loan.

Bad news for the Trap haters - Niall Quinn wants a change of manager.

Perhaps if we all look up in to the sky, a better manager will appear.

if he cant get a game for Everton he must be shit

+1

Also citing getting players from England and Scotland as a plus point, they are two footballing backwaters.

Robbie ruled out of the Austria game.

Kevin Doyle has been called up to the squad. No confirmation yet as to whether he was called or merely texted.

That’s a crushing blow to our chances on Tuesday.

Robbie will be particularly missed in a home game I think.

I agree Fingal raven. Bogball is an Irish equivalent of Scotland’s Highland games, simple rural pursuits that hark back to days of inbred ignorance. To talk about caber tossing or hurling etc in a football thread is ridiculous.

It’ll be interesting to see if he’s replaced with a striker in a 4-4-2 or whether he goes for Wes Hoolahan playing off a front man. We already have players like Walters and Sammon who can do the Doyle donkey work job and I would have liked to see us call up someone with more guile and finishing ability such as Anthony Stokes.
