can anyone give me a debriefing about the Austrian side please?
the only austrian player i know is Paul Sharner (sp) who used to play with Wigan
I remember they beat us in Lansdowne road in june 1995 ( the day before my JC irish exam)
Their domestic club game is crap, israeli sides have beaten them regularly over the last few season,
i played a game their once with a MSL representative side ( think Runt was playing as well) in 2001 against one of their amateur league teams from a place called Tirol and we beat them 2-0, they were crap
I watched that Austrian game in McGinleys in Letterkenny entertaining some English work colleagues. It was on Sky Sports for some reason and an ad for a game featuring the club formerly known as Rangers came on at half time. Whole pub of about 150 people goes silent and one of the English lads says something along the lines of “excellent, can’t wait to watch my Rangers on Sunday”. “Put your drink down, grab your jackets and follow me” says I, leading them out of the place to the relative safety of the main street. I had to meet someone in there a few days later, when I walked in the barman says “Have your wee mates gone home then Fitzy ?” “Er, yes”. “Thats probably a good thing then, for them, and you”.
What a shit night, we got hammered (in the football like), I had to endure these english cunts and it turned out one of them was a hun who nearly got me killed.
I’d love it if we beat the shit out of the facist austrian cunts for putting me through that. Though I doubt it.

Slightly better squad than us:
They seem to be in transition with their keeper so we’ll call that a draw.
Back 4 will probably contain Pogatetz (West Ham - not great), Fuchs (Schalke - decent left back), Prodl (Werder Bremen - decent centre back) and some other randomer.
The fact they have Fuchs as a left back means they can play Alaba (Bayern) in midfield who is a class act but only 20. Ivanschitz is a very capable attacking midfielder who is only 29, thought he’d be much older. Arnautovic at Bremen is a good winger and they have a few other middling (German) Bundesliga players to choose from to play in that midfield too.
Up front they have Janko who is a tall fucker and like other tall fuckers he can be a real handful and can have good feet for a big man or he can be ungainly and awkward looking. KIB Man hasn’t been on in a few days but he might come back and let us know what he thinks of Weimann who could play off Janko if selected to do so.

“Not really,” he said after initially looking a little shocked when asked whether the Italian has said much to him about the idea. “Obviously,” he continued, his expression still veering slightly, it seemed, between one of fear and excitement, “it is up to the gaffer what he decides to do and if he did ask me I would try to do the best I could, but he is a great player and it would be a tough job really.”
The midfielder is a likeable character and an engaging interviewee and if there is a concern it is, perhaps, that he is a little too respectful to those around him. The former Doncaster and Derby player heaps praise upon his young former club mate, Jeff Hendrick, and is at pains to stress how difficult it would be for him to displace either James McCarthy or Glenn Whelan in the Republic of Ireland’s starting line-up.
If he is selected to play in Stockholm it will be crucial that he is not in awe of the opposition or their star striker. Green, to be fair, though, simply comes across as a player with a keen sense of where he stands in the game’s pecking order.
Despite constant encouragement from his father, he took years to contact the FAI about being eligible to play for Ireland because he was playing in the lower leagues and didn’t think anyone would be interested.
When he finally mustered up the courage, he had the good fortune to encounter a manager who appreciates precisely what it is he has to offer: pride and application, both of which he possesses in abundance.
For some, Green seems to have become a sort of byword for all that is wrong with the Trapattoni regime. He represents, the critics believe, the triumph of industry over artistry, and the mere mention of his name tends to elicit groans from the purists. The 29-year-old certainly has his limitations but they are sometimes a little too readily trumpeted while the shortcomings of others are more willingly overlooked.
And nobody comes across as feeling more privileged to be involved, more determined to, not so much prove his critics wrong as bring them around or, while we’re at it, more baffled about the ways of a manager who continues to invest in him.
“Yeah, it’s crazy the way it comes about sometimes,” he says. “Obviously there was the late call-up against [Poland. In the end I literally trained for 15 minutes because my plane was delayed and then got 45 minutes in the game. It was the same with the Euros; I got called up when Keith Fahey was injured but ended up featuring against Spainwhile others were overlooked].
“I thought I did well against Poland,” he continues in relation to the criticism he gets, “but everyone is allowed their opinion and there are two quality midfelders in James McCarthy and Glenn Whelan . . . and even Jeff Hendrick coming through at Derby, they’re all quality midfielders and footballers are thick-skinned anyway; not many don’t get stick, even the best in the world just have to take it on the chin.”
Few could argue, in fact, with the impact he had on the Poland game, with Green setting about the visiting midfielders in a way the Irish generally had hopelessly failed to do over the first 45 minutes. Whether he can have the same impact in Stockholm, when the stakes, and the tempo, are so much higher, remains to be seen.
Spain, after all, did not go so well, but if he fails, it won’t be for want of trying, that much seems certain.
Now Now bandage that’s not fair . Everyone knows Anto has been off celebrating the greatest Irish victory in modern times. Winning the grand Slam in the burly girls competition will never be forgotten.
Seems to be the normal apparently Dan. His first time being dropped off the squad in 7 odd years though so he deserved a phonecall imo. Trapp is a bit of a cunt for that regardless of Doyles poor form.
Not surprised so much is being made of this but there’s no story. That’s the standard communication. Players text to withdraw and players get texted to be informed of their selection or otherwise. Doyle has unfortunately been in abysmal form and can’t complain about his non-selection, even if Conor Sammon isn’t a star replacement. I can understand he’s disappointed but it’s always players who get dropped who complain about the manner of it (back in the day they used to find out on teletext). You never hear of a player complaining that they were selected by text message.
