Sweden v Ireland & Ireland v Austria - International Football Double Header

The Indo has done an interesting comparison between the two talisman in tonight’s fixture.

The “fact” says it all, and shows why Keane is the true great

An expert, Paul Green 

Roy Keane was an expert, Gattuso was an expert un that position.

How about a bit of coaching and man management hey? Is it too much to ask for on the money he’s on?

We give out cos the Polish girl trying to survive who pours our coffee doesn’t have great English, but this Mafioso gets a free ride.

Not that I really believe his English is as bad as he let’s on. He’s a smart man, living on our shores a while, like many Italians I have encountered they can “forget” how to speak English very easy.

He is just a top manager who had his day and his methods are now woefully behind the times. We don’t ha e great players, nut we should have a stronger side available and they should ne better equipped to not be beaten 6-1 at home. We are a laughingstock for keeping this guy as manager.

I would have been one of Trappatoni’s supporters for quite a while now but this teamsheet has to be the last straw. We need to play 5 across the middle. I’m not sure what role Keane will play but I imagine he may drop off long and play between the number 10 role and midfield. O Shea centre back is an accident waiting to happen. He was instrumental to QPR winning 3 points against Sunderland a few weeks ago. Paul Green playing is just baffling. Whelan and himself will be overrun all night. My team would have been.

                        Westwood

Coleman Clark O Dea Wilson

Brady McCarthy Whelan McClean

                         Hoolahan

                            Long

if an irish or english manager carried on like this snake oil salesman they would have been fired ages ago.
He is a joke. The one utterly consistent thing this man has done is to piss off his players.
The selection of green is mad enough but this shit about brady is incredible.
For what it’s worth I would have gone for mccarthy and houlihan. The best way to stop the opponent scoring is keep the ball yourself

yeah, that worked a treat vs the Germans

Its amazing the amount of people interested in football but havent the foggiest about how it works!

Ireland are playing away from home against man for man a superior team.
We are going to have to try to stop them playing first and foremost and then make hay with whatever scraps are left.

James McCarthy was identified last month by Chelsea’s leaked pre match document as being weak, poor defensively and cant tackle- in short, a weak link in the midfield.

Green is there for the purposes of trying to stop Sweden and give us a platform, it is his natural role and for that role he is probably the only suitable player available.

I think the 3 days he gets with mccarthy ever few months arent enough to correct the weaknesses in his game

maybe if mccarthy bothered turning up for training now and again he would be an option now again

stick to kids bogball you clown

Zlatan aside that Swedish team doesn’t look too intimidating.

yes - and maradona aside that Argentinian team in 86 wernt great

Maradona is the second greatest footballer in history mate-Zlatan is a journeyman playing in the 5th strongest league in Europe.

Ah they weren’t that shabby in fairness.

wrong on all counts

Relatively speaking you may have a point if you compare them to the Spanish or Germans but when compared to our side you would be hard pushed to find too many Irish players who would make the Swedish starting 11. You could argue that Coleman might get in ahead of Lustig and that one of Keane or Long up front but that aside I can’t see anyone else from our group of players getting in their teams with all things being equal

Raven has addressed this a bit but McCarthy hasn’t exactly bent over backwards to make himself available for friendlies and there has been no real opportunity to develop him into anything at international level other than just copying his club role. He’s been ok but hardly stellar for his club and concerns about his defensive discipline and awareness remain. Green is better at that role and the universal hatred for him is odd and a bit shameful.

Developing players is difficult at international level because there simply aren’t that many games and there are short windows to look at players. You could opt for a longer term view and appoint a coach to look after that side of things and filter it all the way down to youth levels. Or you can have the youth levels operating as one and then have a results-oriented manager for the senior team which is the model Ireland (and nearly every other country) have gone for. Trap is not interested in whether McCarthy will be a better option in 5 years or not. That’s not his role.

Whelan is out.

This should be good.

Simon Cox in for Whelan maybe? Is McShane in the squad?

Mikael Lustig is a far better player than Coleman, unfortunately.

Has Robbie Brady’s mental defectiveness been cured over night?
