My thoughts below - i know some will say itās heart over head but itās actually heart and head
This is a massive game for both sides and one where there is probably a little more pressure on the home side than the visitors. If England are to harbour hopes of at least reaching the World Cup final next year, then they should be beating sides like Ireland at home on a regular basis.
Save for an inexplicable ten minutes against the French, Stuart Lancasterās men have been calm, collected and measured in their approach to this yearās tournament and should be coming into this game having won their previous two matches. However, the history books tell us that it was France that triumphed in Paris and instead it is Ireland who come here with an 100% record in this yearās competition having easily dispatched of Scotland in the first week and then rolling Wales over in the second.
Ireland have impressed many onlookers this year and are actually favourites in places to lift the trophy. I may be getting cynical in my old age but I still think Joe Schmidtās men have a lot to prove. The new coach has got his tactics spot on so far and England will be tested from this perspective but this has to be a good thing for Lancasterās men. So far, Ireland have beaten a poor Scotland outfit and also beaten an out-of-sorts Welsh outfit. Schmidt out-thought Gatland tactically and negated the Welsh āPlan Aā so effectively that they couldnāt play rugby at all. However, whereas Wales didnāt have a back-up option, Iād be surprised if England couldnāt adapt their style of play to change around Schmidtās tactics.
If England do this well, then theyāll beat Ireland fairly easily as they are much the better team on paper. A lot has been written about the absence of Dan Cole, who will miss the rest of the season with a bulging disc, but he may not be missed as much as has been suggested and Iām looking forward to seeing David Wilson get his chance as heās been very strong in the scrum of late.
England are going the right way at the moment and their players seem to be gelling well. The inclusion of George Ford in the squad suggests Lancaster wants to blood his young talent at the right time and it will be fascinating to see how he gets on if he makes his debut at some point during the game.
Munster lock Donncha Ryan has been included in Schmidtās squad for this game as he continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury which required surgery last November.
While others may think match will be tight, Iāve got a feeling England can stamp their authority on this game and win a shade cosily. The clash between Luther Burrell and Brian OāDriscoll in the centres will be fascinating while Englandās back-row will surely not give Johnny Sexton as much space that he had against the Welsh. There has been support for Ireland in the betting following the news that Cole is out of the season but I think Wilson is more than capable of replacing him and for me, England rate the best bet of the Six Nations so far.
Verdict:
England by 8.
Mr Dancing Baby that is a well thought out analysis of tomorrowās game. You are indeed a credit to your parents and the love of rugby in your home is evident.
