"Symonds flattens streaker, faces ban
Eurosport - Tue, 04 Mar 11:12:00 2008
Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds flattened a streaker who ran on to the field during the second tri-series final against India at the Gabba in Brisbane.
The naked man came off second best after he evaded security and charged towards Symonds while he was batting during Australiaâs run-chase.
Symonds stood his ground as the man approach and dropped the pitch invader with a rugby-style shoulder charge.
The man was arrested by police and faces the possibility of a fine and a life ban from the Gabba.
Symonds, who briefly contemplated a career in rugby league before he broke into the Australian team, also faces the risk of punishment under the International Cricket Councilâs strict code of conduct.
The code includes a section banning players from any physical assault of a rival player, official or spectator."
Itâd be a disgrace if Symonds gets banned for this.
Wasnât there a guy a few years ago who interrupted a Barca Real game (in a Champions League semi final I think) and made a run towards Figo who had joined Real the summer before from Barca.
He jumped into the net bringing the whole thing down and the game was delayed for about 10 minutes.
I donât think Barca have played Real in a CL semi-final (maybe they have?) but it might have happened in La Liga? Symonds is a good guy alright and one of the Australians that I retain some respect for after the disgraceful antics of Ponting and Pup Clarke in the test series this winter just gone. As it was only a shoulder charge I expect theyâll let him away with a warning - anything harsher would be a travesty.
Was having a conversation with Rock in the pub on Saturday about Barcelonaâs dedicated passing philosophy and I brought up that game as well as an example of where they were down in the last five minutes and refused to lump the ball forward and continued passing it through midfield.
Iâll look it up.
What about that idiot who ran on the pitch and inflicted serious injury on Dida?
they did alright madrid went on to win it the same yearâŚthink they beat valencia or bayern in the final cant remember the yearâŚ2002 or 2003 maybeâŚ
pretty sure it was a semi barcelona had a great run in the CL but were brutal in the leagueâŚvan gaal was the manager the same year and got the road with radi antic taking over i believe
There were echoes of Real Madridâs legendary 1960 final victory when they faced another German team (Bayer Leverkusen) in the 2002 final at Glasgowâs Hampden Park. Bayer became the first finalist never to have won their domestic league. Furthering the comparisons with the classic team of Di Stfano and Pusks was the much-hyped âGalacticoâ policy Real Madrid were pursuing at the time, where they intended to sign one world-class player a year. That season they added multiple FIFA World Player of the Year winner, Zinedine Zidane, to their ranks for a world record fee of âŹ71 million. Zidane and Madrid lived up to the hype; the Frenchman displayed textbook skill to acrobatically volley home the winner in their 2-1 victory that gave the club its ninth European Cup, after defeating fellow La Liga side Barcelona in the semi-finals, where the Spanish dominance continued with them having the most semi-finalists for the 3rd season running with two in 2002 (three in 2000, two in 2001 and two in 2002) and culminating with Real Madrid becoming European Champions for the third time in five seasons.
Exactly Farmer - itâs a miracle Didaâs played since then.
I used to always love the nutters on the Alps and Pyrenees (spelling?) during Le Tourâs mountain stages legging it along beside the cyclists, srcreaming manically in their faces with veins pumping out of their heads and also pouring water all over the competitors whether they wanted it or not. Every now and again one of them would take down a cyclist through either over-exuberance or sheer craziness but I think thereâs an unwritten rule in cycling that you donât take advantage of someone crashing and instead allow them to rejoin the pack.
The worst example of supporter interference in a competition was when the Biffos had their sit-down protest in Croke Park in 1998 after Jimmy Cooney blew up the semi-final with Clare too early.
that English lad who does all the streaking (the guy who shook Seamans hand, 19th hole at golf etc) streaked at the Superbowl a couple of years back. Did it either at half time, or at one of the 1/4âs (think it was half tho). As the teams were coming back onto the pitch, he was doing his streak. Mike Vrable of the Patriots leveled him with a shoulder, knocked him clean to the ground. Cops had an easy arrest then!
have absolutely no recollection of either of those Barca-Real Madrid games. It was around the time of my college finals but I was hardly studying that hard. A more recent example of supporter participation in matches was last yearâs âMiracle of Milanâ when Santino Marella was plucked from the crowd during a WWE event in Italy to take on then Intercontinental Champion, Umaga, and unbelievably won the title with the help of interference from Bobby Lashley. Off the cuff, off the hook, off the chain.
They went on to win an All-Ireland on the strength of that as well.
Remember seeing that on Irish Sports 20 Biggest Moments that was on RTE a while ago. A few Biffos went up to Cooney and said that he had blown too early. I think he blew up in the 32 minute of the half. His response was âwhat are you talking about lads - I have played two minutes injury time hereâ. He was thinking it was a 30 minute half. Talk about a schoolboy error.
Just on that - wasnât there 30 minutes a half in intercounty league GAA a few years ago? That has been abandoned now. Stupid rule it was as well. Think it is still there for clubs in the county leagues.
