Down had us well figured out on Saturday. It was pretty chastening. I reckon if you turn the screw on them they can be got at, but we never laid a glove.

Had someone managed to knock us out the whole competition would have opened up. There will be a similar situation with Kildare next season.
The key for the next 2-3 seasons is to stay in Div 2, ideally even sneak into Div 1. We got the boost of the Tailteann win a couple of years ago which helped deliver the fine run last summer and the win against Donegal this year, but to consistently compete we have to be used to playing and winning in the top 2 divisions.
Westmeath will be in tailteann next year too.
Unless they make a strong effort at defending their Leinster crown. Probably 18 counties who could compete at Sam Maguire level, it’s not long ago we only had a handful.
The Tantrum Cup has held the current Down team back very badly.
It has denied them the experience you get with year on year championship runs which they would have had had they not been banished to play games of drudgery in fields with 23 sheep looking on.
Under the old system the experience they got from their run in 2025 would have been got in 2023, and then they’d have been primed to make a better run in 2024, and by 2025 or certainly this year could have been in a position to actually win an All-Ireland. Instead they’ve consistently got unlucky with draws in Ulster and been consigned to the Taggy Fogarty.

I think there’s an argument to be made for leaving may 6 teams on the Tailteann at some point and putting the rest of us back into the All Ireland. But that could be for another day

The current system is perfect. It holds nobody back. Get into division 2 and stay there or make your provincial final or win the tailteann cup. Three routes to get into it. It’s not Go Games.

Sure you’re arguing against yourself where you admit that 322 people will watch the semi-finals of the Hey Mr. Tambourine Man Cup.
An essential component of a functioning system is more than 322 spectators, and teams who don’t behave as if they’re in a hostage video pleading to avoid being beheaded rather than having to play in the Thankless Drudgery Cup.
Who gets to compete in the championship should not be decided in the muck and the shit of league football in February.
Everybody should be competing in the championship because that’s the way it has always been and it worked.
The provincials will not sustain because teams are going to very quickly cop on there’s no point in wasting energy on them. None of the provincial champions are in the quarter-finals currently. Roscommon have limped out after busting their bollocks winning Connacht, a tired Armagh got ambushed by Louth and a phantom clock, Westmeath won’t reach the quarter-finals either. So you’ll likely have one provincial champion reaching the quarter-finals.
The old system was shite. Everyone was sick of it and the sport was dying a death. Now it’s been completely revitalised and youve been proved completely wrong. (In my humble opinion)

League needs to be shortened or got rid of.
this would make more time for the actual championships: provincial, all Ireland and Tailteann.
The 2024 championship was a much superior version to the 2025 one.
The Trapazoid is not a championship.
There should also be proper promotion/relegation between Sam Maguire/Tailteann like county championships
Teams like Kildare this year and Clare in previous years are just waiting to be knocked out of Sam Maguire.
