Terrorism Thread. The terror of another nembo kev thread

What are the Muslim countries in the middle east where ISIS are very active in doing to stop them? They seem to be doing very little from the outside, probably happy to let them terrorise the west as it’s not their problem.

The guy behind this atrocity is from Libyan stock.

Did this whole ISIS thing kick off with the ousting of Gadaffi?

In Libya it did. Think what you want of Gadaffi but there is no doubt the country was a better place when he was running the show.

No, they originated in Iraq. They are basically the Sunnis who were loyal to Saddam and joined up with al Qaeda (for a while) to become AQI and later spread into Syria and beyond. In answer to your other question, most of the countries where ISIS is active are embroiled in civil war or unstable, so fighting ISIS mightn’t be their top priority.

I won’t pretend to be at all informed on this matter but it all seems to be that these dictators in middle eastern countries that are ousted and a far bigger evil takes its place.

Saddam gone - Iraq in a shit heap.
Civil war in Syria over Assad
Libya with Gaddafi.
Yanks arming Bin Laden.

The fundamental issue is Sunni versus Shiite, who hate each other with a passion. You should be familiar with the concept, think NI but with several hundred million involved.

And what have the Westerners to do with this?

Trying to do business with them since oil was discovered. Propping up various dictators to try and maintain some kind of order. You’re basic point is correct though, as left to their own devices Sunnis and Shiites tend to slaughter each other, dictatorship seems to be the only thing that sort of works. The neo-con vision of bringing democracy to the ME was so fucking stupid.

So the solution is to support fracking and let ISIS and Al Qaeda continue to beat the shit out of each other.

A guantanamo bay type place is needed, round up all known or suspected terrorists and those they are affiliated with, ship them off and torture the fuck out of them and leave them in a prison cell for as long as it takes, the fear of torture will stop these fucks. They all living off the state while they are at it - torture is all that will break and deter

That’s not entirely true. Prior to the war, people from both communities in Iraq said that sectarian bloodshed would not happen because of the degree of integration between the communities.

But then the entire society collapsed, and religious extremists on either side started to exploit the situation by murdering innocent civilians with the ‘wrong’ faith. This is similar to what happened in the break up of Yugoslavia. Northern Ireland is not a particularly useful analogue for Iraq at least.

It’s at least as much to do with political boundaries and institutions as it is to do with religion. Just as Europe was torn apart by war as it’s nation states took shape, the middle east looks to be on a similar trajectory.

Is there a much of a difference really anymore between this sort of attack and, say, the Columbine Massacre? Some lunatic with problems finds a cause and goes to town. Again, the narrative is this spectre of Muslim terror, bigging up said cause. Once the papers get a hold of a photo of yer man his gormless head will be staring out at us vacantly from the front pages. Another icon for the disaffected youth. And so it goes.

ISIS and al Qaeda are both Sunnis, but yes it would be good if they destroyed each other over who’s jihad is better.
The dependency of the west on ME oil is the root cause of much of the historic and modern day conflict, so the quicker we become energy independent the better.

Who are the Shites main players so?

Fair points, I was dumbing it down.

Iran/Iraq.

Are Shia the good guys?

The commonality is delusion, and the level of delusion.

There are no good guys in the conflict, although the ISIS brand of what defines a proper Muslim is the most extreme (they will slaughter Sunnis as well who are not supportive). It’s what believing in religious nonsense can do to the human mind.
