Test Match Cricket

Emphasises how hapless the England batting has been all series. He may be quick but he can only sustain it in short spurts, so just batten down the hatches and see him off for those 3-4 overs. Its not like its Alan Donald who can spend most of the day bowling at that speed and never get tired.

Century for Rogers.

Top run scorer over the 10 tests. Not one chance this morning.

8 runs and 4 wickets in the last two overs. This series will shake english and welsh cricket for years.

All over 5-0 Aus.

Rogers is one of the only batsman I know whose cricketing style differs from his personality, thrse lsfs are true blue Australian heroes and great that the townsville provo was player of the series

That’s quite a transformation in the mood in Australia. During their 9 game winless run in 2013, when players were variously sent home from India for not doing their homework and picking fights with opposition players in bars, they were being described by the Australian press as a national disgrace and possibly the worst body of players ever to represent Australia.

Smashing the brits 5 0 changes opinion,

They were hardly as bad against the great windies sides. I think some of the powers that be think it is a freak result. They will roll over sri lanka and maybe India in English conditions and think everything is hunky dory. Flower seems to have the vote of confidence. Vaughan was writing in Telegraph that there are too many yes men in the set up. He said they should put KP in as vice captain. Right now i would replace Cook with Broad, he showed a bit of fight.

They weren’t. Just thinking back to the Blackwash tour of 1984, you had Allan Lamb taking the fight to the Windies posting centuries in three successive tests. I’d agree it does seem to be the case that the ECB has adopted the approach, this an ordinary if game Australian side that has put some of the most decorated players England have ever had to the sword, so its just one of those crazy one off’s that sport throws up. It would be a foolish approach to adopt because there have been signs of an underlying malaise for a long time now. Cook has to be replaced as captain. No captain should be allowed to survive what he has presided over for the last 7 weeks. I would agree with you on giving Broad the job. Broad and Stokes are the only two players for England to have emerged from this shambles with any credit, battling manfully to the last. Its ironic that the 5-0 whitewash of 7 years ago, when England battled manfully albeit in vain against one of the great test sides was the catalyst for such radical change. When the need appears even greater now, the ECB look like they will do nothing.
Warne would be a very interesting choice as England coach. He has a fantastic cricket brain and I enjoy listening to him. He spends a good bit of his time in the UK and understands the English mindset. Somehow I can’t see the ECB going for it though.

Strauss, Trott and Swann (through his elbow injury initially and now retirement) are all huge losses but I’d be resisting any talk of a mass clearout. Cook, Pietersen, Anderson and possibly Prior as well can all comeback strongly after a proper lay off. The captaincy is a concern and a change of coach and fresh ideas are required.

Its worth remembering that 7 of the Australia team that started in Melbourne on Boxing Day played in the corresponding Boxing Day test three years ago, which was the most comprehensive of the three innings defeats that England inflicted in that series. Warner, Rogers, Bailey & Lyon for Hughes, Ponting, Hussey and Hilfenhaus were the four changes in personnel. Things can turn around quickly enough. India were whitewashed 4-0 in Australia two years ago and 15 months later it was India inflicting a 4-0 whitewash.

With 7 of this Australian team over 30 and Siddle 29, there’ probably going to be a few changes over the next year or two. What sort of talent is coming through in Australia? Pattinson and Cummins look useful enough as fast bowlers but both seem quite injury prone.
Mauel and @flattythehurdler - Shane Warne has been appointed Australia’s spin coach for T20 ahead of the WC in Bangladesh in March. Great news and will hopefully lead to a further appointment as the test spin coach. I’d imagine he would have been very open to a coaching role with England though.

I’d say he has fully thrown his lot in with the Aussies now. Oul Liz Hurley should have laid back and thought of England. Best coach in world cricket he will be I reckon.

Andy Flower is gone

Alistair Cooke to follow I’d imagine. Can’t have a captain for the next ashes who does a passable imitation of bambi.

Something had to give for England - they looked like a team that was mentally tired and in need of freshening up. Flower did a really excellent job there, but it had come to the end of the cycle. You don’t want to presume that you can replicate exactly what the Aussies have done, but a somewhat lighter touch from the next head coach would probably be welcome to give the players a bit more freedom, though the likes of KP would have to accept that with fewer diktats from above comes more of a need for personal responsibility.

There isn’t going to be widespread changes to the team in the short run. I’d expect all of the following to be playing against India this summer - Cook, Root, Bell, KP, Prior, Anderson, Broad. That leaves four spots to fill - Stokes will be one of them, presumably batting at six, but not sure if he’s good enough to be batting that high though. That leaves three spots. You could argue that Stokes would allow you experiment with some options in terms of balance of the team, but let’s presume it’s a batsman, a seamer and a spinner to come in. The number five spot is wide open as far as I can see. Saw someone on Cricinfo making a case for Morgan, and his form in the ODIs could give him a shout, but the fact that he’ll be playing IPL when the county season starts will probably rule him out (and rightly so to be honest, he needs to prove he can score first class runs before being considered for Test selection). Someone like Taylor could get back in, can’t fully understand why he was jettisoned so quickly in the first place. He looked okay against the Saffers in 2012. They could also drop Root down the order again and play Compton or even stick with Carberry opening. I presume they are done with Monty at this stage. Neither of the spinning debutants over the last six months really looked the part. Not sure what they are going to do. A bit of talk that they might try someone like Jordan as the third seamer as he can get the speed gun up to the high 80s. If Finn gets his form back for Middlesex, I presume they will get him back in.

Can’t fucking wait for the SA-Aus series. Taking a few days off around the first Test, so should get to watch it in full. Who will bat six for Aus @Fitzy, now that Marsh is out? Doolan I presume, or will they give themselves an extra bowling option and play Henriques? I thought he was relatively decent in an otherwise nightmare tour of India last year. The other 10 will remain unchanged from the Ashes I presume.

KP didn’t like Taylor apparently. Presume he is the successor of Bell. I’d have Compton back myself. Jordan looks like he gives it some wheels. Borthwick is probably the next spinner but he needs a few years yet. Buttler is the eventual replacement of Prior. I reckon Cook will hang on for the summer but Broad will be captain this time next year. Good post by the way, Braz.

Compton should have been taken to Australia, that was a dreadful decision. Carberry wasn’t awful though, to be fair to him. They’ll give Cook every chance to succeed as captain, partly because of the lack of an obvious alternative. Broad is the most intriguing option, I’m never a fan of a bowling captain though. I presume Bell isn’t seen as a potential captain, or doesn’t want it.

Saw a little of Jordan in the ODI series. He has pace alright, but I could see him going for runs. There seemed to be a touch of the five decent balls, one poor one about him. With Swann gone and Anderson looking like he’s on the wane, a wicket taker who goes at a bit of a clip probably wouldn’t be looked upon as badly for them as it did with Finn in 2010/11 so they might try to find room for him alright.

Anderson used to always go for one loose ball early on, that can be coached out of Jordan. Can’t read Bell myself, reckon he would be too passive to be a captain. Cook just doesn’t have it. let him concentrate on what he does best, scoring runs. Carberry could play anywhere in the order. I reckon Morgan is worth another look.

KP is gone

Hard to pass judgement when you don’t know exactly what has happened, but I’ll give it a go anyway. Seems to me like a horrible indictment of a rigid monolithic set-up that they can’t find a way to accommodate a difficult personality that is a massive talent with a proven track record. Bullshit references to “team ethic and philosophy” in their statement. They don’t have to like him, and I don’t think anyone has ever expressed any doubt that he is anything other than 100% committed to England winning. Will make them an even more dislikeable, boring, cliquey team. I hope Cook’s miserable reign ends in another Ashes whitewash next year.
