Ill second the calls for the suggested topics thing to be removed and ratings returned. Any chance of a ‘board room’ button at the top and bottom of threads

There is no need for suggested topics to keep popping up under each thread. Especially if those threads are years old.
It’s only my €0.02 but it’s not particularly easy to navigate now. Everything is fairly jumbled up. What worked well on the old site was simplicity. Click into the main section, click into soccer section. I just think it looks very unseemly now. And is not good aesthetically.
What is jumbled up? The topics/threads are in exactly the same order as they were before. You now have the option of viewing them by category - which can only be helpful as you can completely ignore that if you choose to. You used to have the option of viewing them by prefix. The prefixes were hacky and clunky though. They weren’t intuitive or properly in-built and as a result they were awkward to navigate through.

Plus removing the ratings is a big minus too. Ratings were the best things about the place. Now it’s a dose to find out who liked your post, to see an original post that is being quoted and replied too.
The ratings I did like. Again they weren’t a core part of the last software so they became a bit of a bitch to cater for when the site was being upgraded or restyled. Their biggest disadvantage was that they added more icons around a post which made it very crowded on mobile. Though if I could get them back, or some version of them, I would.
Want to hear opinions. There are certainly things that can be tweaked/improved/changed etc.
I’ll do a poll on the suggested topics in a few days. I kind of like them but understand they’re not everyone’s cup of tea so can either:
keep them
get rid of them completely
reduce it to say one so it’s just the same as an I’m feeling lucky random topic
restrict it to only suggest topics from the same category as the topic you’re reading
style it so that it’s smaller and faded a bit so it’s less striking in your face
The Sunday game thread right now is a good example of why personally, I dont think it would work here in any case, obviously you have good reason to believe its the way forward and works elsewhere. There is about 4 or 5 different conversations going on, and its just random posts here and there which have no link to what is being said, but they have a link to something that has previously been said. MBB was the only one to actually use the include quote function, but the rest of it is a jumbled up mess which makes it far harder to follow than if the actual quote is just there so you knew what they were talking about or what they were responding to.
Maybe its just me and it will take time to get used to, but I dont see how it improves things. I dont see how the previous way of the quote being included was in any way problematic, I thought the last one where the quote was truncated solved that problem quite well.

Yep, click on it and then type in the relevant comment number and hit Go:
Yep: see my other post there above on suggested topics. I’m happy to adjust. Just want to leave it a couple of days to get opinions.
And I’ll add the board room button at the bottom to the list of suggestions to be considered. Should be fairly straightforward.
I’m not too bothered one way or the other. I appreciate this is your passion and you’ve gone to a lot of work, and fair play for that. The new site is impressive, and I suspect you have to realise with the sort of curmudgeons you are dealing with here insofar as they love to bitch about everything, so its inevitable they’ll do likewise with this.
Some bits of feedback
I dont like the quote a post function as it stands, and as outlined by others, its very unwieldy on the iphone.
The suggested threads can be dumped, lets be honest, if we want we’ll find the thread to bump or Sid will just do it for us. It can be a pain on safari when they’re popping up under your reply to box.
I liked the ratings, but I wouldnt worry yourself too much about trying to get them back or anything.
I miss the ignore function already, but see above re that.
Yeah, that’s fair enough and a decent example. But if people are at least replying to eachother, which they are, then you can see the links because they’re there. You’re just not used to reading it that way.
If you look at it another way, when you’re reading a post you can read the replies to that post at the same time by clicking on the # replies at the bottom left of that post. So I think that adds something that you didn’t have before because you can see the responses in-line and that helps with the distraction.
But overall you’re right - if people are going off in tangents it makes things confusing. I think it always did though because I hated reading quotes because I knew I had already read that post and wasn’t going to be reading it again, even on a place like TFK where every post is thoughtful and articulate.
By the way, one of the easiest things about navigating this place is using keyboard shortcuts. Not sure if they’ll confuse everyone straight off so didn’t really mention them (except in some random post) but they make it very easy to get around.
To see a list of shortcuts press ? on your keyboard.
So to answer @maroonandwhite’s earlier question about the blue progress bar. I can click on that and type in a post number I want to go to or I can just press # then the post number and then enter to go there.
And to answer the request for a “Board Room” button at the bottom. Not ruling that out but just for info, press g then h to go back to the home screen.
Obviously none of those are handy on the phone but they make things really quick if you’re on a laptop/desktop, particularly those on the left hand side of the ? menu.
@Rocko separate issue, but are watched threads gone? I found it handy for the likes of the fantasy football or AFL, topics that wouldnt be constantly near the top of the first page (which I know is now also gone, but you know what I mean) I know you can watch threads but that gives you a notification of new posts etc, I just want to know if it is like last time where you click a tab, and all the watched threads you subscribed to are there in an easy to find list.
There are bookmarks instead. You can bookmark a topic or a post and you see a list of those under your avatar dropdown.
Also there’s a difference between tracking a topic which is a light follow and watching it which is more active. But bookmarks seems to be what you’re after. Little bookmark icon at the end of each post and of each topic.
