Signing in. Got roped into running a half-marathon in Spain next February with a couple of pals. Still have the fitness from the GAA season and playing a bit of soccer over the winter to stay fit. Iād usually be just over 20 minutes when running a 5km but slowed the pace a bit for a 10km run last night. Ran at a pace of 4:38 per kilometre which is probably more sustainable over a long 21km run. Think Iāll chance 15km on Friday.
Welcome aboard. Youāll be grand. Thatās decent speed for a lad starting out.
If youāre planning on running at 4.38 pace in February, you should be running your 15km on Friday at around 5.38 pace. Most of your running should be relatively easy.
Do quick intervals (e.g. 5 or 6 x 800m) once a week and maybe 30 or 40 minutes tempo once a week at maybe about about 4.50-5 min pace.
Thatās my amateur advice. @fenwaypark is the proper man to ask.
Welcome aboard pal. We really need an infusion of youth & some new energy (cc Si Harris) on this thread. Youāre clearly fit & fast & @corner_back knows the story.
Welcome to the only group on tfk where you can be positive to your fellow poster.
Informative. Iād never have considered slowing down to that extent but had noted that some of our seasoned athletes on here like @Bandage do tend to have recovery days where theyāre advised to slow the pace by Coach Fenway. Iāll have a soccer training session, a gym session and a 90 minute match in the mix over the winter too so Iāll have to work a good long run in there once a week. The GAA season will be starting back when the run takes place.
GAA fitness will get you through a half marathon. One key thing is that your long runs canāt really be too slow. If you go at race pace or close too it , youāll just end up building up lactic acid, putting yourself into a ball and developing a hatred for running while not getting any major benefit.
The lottery for the 2025 Dublin City Marathon opened at 10am and it remains open until next Wednesday. Youāll find out on Monday 2 December if youāre successful. Iām going to enter, as I was inspired by my TFK comrades & the other runners from my mile 25 vantage point. Even if unsuccessful in this initial lottery, I think most people who want to do it will get in as theyāve loosened the return & transfer process - youād just have to wait a while to get the entry in the hand though. I think Iād prefer to tackle Dublin again than a foreign marathon next year.
