TFK Fun Running Thread 2025

Back at it. A run with the lads.

Happy new year, TFK fun runners. :tada: I started the year with a nice St Anne’s parkrun this morning.

I’m not setting any headline running goals this year. I want to try to get back to a flow & where I’m enjoying running for running itself.

That said, I’ll train away, look to improve fitness & compete in the odd race to check progress.

I’ve the Raheny 5 Mile & Trim 10 Mile on successive Sundays at the end of January & start of February.

I’ll probably try to pick up an entry for the new Dublin City Half Marathon when they go on sale next week - race is at the end of March. My only other definite race in the calendar is the Dublin City Marathon itself so that will be the H2 focus.

Best wishes to all for enjoyable & injury free running in 2’25.

Best of luck everyone for 2025!

No marathons planned as of yet for 2025. Think I’ll concentrate on shorter stuff until the summer anyway. Meant to run masters cross country on Sunday. Will you be in attendance @Bandage ?

Doing some 100km challenge on Strava for January, Trim 10 Miles in February and hopefully the new Dublin City half in March.

Cork and Dublin marathons this year. No time in mind for Cork, just get around. PB for Dublin is the only goal!

Never knew you lined in Ukraine

I’m unlikely to be around. Had tentative plans to be in Wexford on Sunday but I see there’s a snow warning now issued (cc @TreatyStones). Either way, I doubt I’ll be braving the cold in St Anne’s. It’s a new course this year btw, over by the front of the park facing onto the water.

I heard it’s a new course alright. I’ll just be making up the numbers so won’t impact me too much. If the weather is as forecast I might skip it. Not a fan of cross country at the best of times.

I’ve an entry for the Adare 10k at the end of February so I’m going to try and put in a decent block of training before that and then role that on again into the Limerick half on the May weekend.

All going well I’m going to aim to break the 1hr 30 mark for the half.

There’s that old saying…comparison is the thief of joy…& it refers to doing your own thing & not to be worrying what other people are at. But I find myself looking at my own progress or lack thereof & getting irked when comparing to previous times. I covered 13km exactly in that tempo & hills session this morning. I did the exact same session a year ago to the day & also at the start of last May & covered 13.79km & 14.34km respectively. I need to get into the mindset of playing the long game. I guess it doesn’t matter if I’m 60-90 seconds slower than last year in the upcoming Raheny 5. I need to patiently build over the year to be in position to do myself justice in Dublin in October.

It’s not about where you’re coming from, it’s about where you are going. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and work towards your goal.

Beautiful. And a gift to some folk on how to set their stall out for the rest of the year .

Question for the experts: I’ve been a slave to the data at certain block’s throughout my running journey over the years. Chasing pace etc. Now I largely disregard pace, and just enjoy running distance.
I want to be able to run half marathons and marathons into as old an age as possible.
The question is, does pushing your body for PB’s all the time erode and wear down the bodyparts quicker, and cut your running years shorter as opposed to just concentrating on finishing a goal distance, at your natural pace?

Everyone is built differently. Chasing PBs all the time stresses the body and increases likelihood of injury. For me, I always break down when pushing the body. Now at my age, I’m content with just getting out for a run, don’t worry about the pace.

@Wexford1996 cross country in St Anne’s Park is ON, according to my WhatsApp groups.

I heard that alright, not looking forward to it at all. No snow at all over this side and doesn’t seem too bad at the moment.

No snow but pretty windy over this side by the coast & it’s rainy & very cold too. My Strava links to some weather app & yesterday it said 1 degree & feels like that too. Today it says 4 degrees but feels like minus 4 degrees. I just ran past the course set up & it’s actually feels much colder today alright.

Got through it anyway. Conditions were brutal but good course. Was well back but paced it pretty well and managed to pick up a few places on the last lap.
