Just thought I’d start this off on the first day of '10. The countdown to Vancouver is well and truly on.
Ireland looking to have a decent representation this time out but I’m not 100% certain who has qualified:
I know that Shane O’Connor has qualified in the slalom
We have a womens bobsleigh team that I’m about 80% sure have qualified
Kirsten McGarry had a good start to her season but I’m not certain what her progress has been since then
Then there are a few other randomers in cross country skiing and the skeleton.
I’m looking forward to Wengen and Kitzbuhel, they should be a good pointer to form for the main event of the downhill. The usual suspects are in good form. Cuche, Svindahl, Raich with Janka surprising me to be leading the world cup standings. Bode is down the field at the moment but is probably aiming to peak for Vancouver.
The 4 hills started yesterday, today and are on again tomorrow and over the next few days. Austrians have it sown up so far.
Feel free to contribute thoughts on wintersports related items

Have you never seen the power and glory of Herman in his prime, the precision of Didier Cuche or the unpredictable genius that is Bode Miller?
How could they leave you cold?
You haven’t lived yet
Will Lord Clifton Lancelot de Verdon Wrottesley be going in the skeleton for Ireland in Vancouver this time? I might make the trip over to support him if he is.
Seminal weekend at Wengen in preparation for the Olympics
Janka only a young fella wins the Lauberhorn, Bode won the supercombined on Friday evening for his first win in 2 yrs ( he crashed out of the downhill near the end when it looked like he would have a podium finish
Ivica Kostelic won the slalom easily enough
Attention is now shifting to Kitzbuhel and the Hannenkahm for the last great challenge before the Olympics. A victory on the Hannenkahm ensures legend status.
Heading off on Wed so I’m really in the mood for some fresh powder
The main Irish focus will be on the Skeleton to see if Wexford’s Pat Shannon can emulate the performance of Lord Clifton Hugh Lancelot de Verdon Wrottesley at Salt Lake City in 2002.
Is it true that Pat was seen hurtling face first down the icy slopes of Vinegar Hill during the recent cold snap? What about the rumours of him climbing to the rarified air of the snowcapped summit of Mount Leinster at 6 in the morning before speeding down the eastern slopes back into strawberry country? He’s putting the bog back in toboggan. Fair play to him, Wexford has a new sporting hero and by god it needs it.
