That's it ! everybody in RTE should be executed forthwith

Only a dope would be stunned at any further revelations about Haugheys level of gangsterness.

Goodman was the worst thing to ever happen this country this side of Cromwell

The FF cabinets back then were some collections of dodgy sorts ( to be kind)

Pat Rabbitte is still a wanker of the highest order

Ah lads, the only person arrested after the beef tribunal was Susan O Keefe the journalist who broke the story.

the likes of Haughey and his cronies have held Ireland back a good 20 or 30 years…

You just know that Goodman is absolutely seething that Rte had the audacity to air this show about him judging by his reactions to criticism over the years…

Banana Republic

Ah stop. They set up a tribunal that all the rich lads got richer from. It cost 35 million. Went on for years. The ironically titled Justice Hamilton’s findings were so vague and complicated that all the guilty parties Goodman, Haughey, Reynolds etc were able to claim vindication. Then they arrested the journalist who broke the story because she refused to reveal her sources. . Goodman is still at it and bigger and better than ever.

Could you in no more than 7 (seven) bullet points please outline what Goodman did? I’ve never really looked into it. Tread carefully from a legal point of view though.

  • Goodman’s company started exporting huge quantities of beef to Iraq in the late 80s
  • A risky venture, but the nice people in the FF government Haughey, Reynolds etc decided to offer ‘export credit insurance’ to Goodmans company so they were covered if the Iraqi’s decided not to pay
  • This meant taxpayers were covering Goodmans company which was a private company. No other meat processor was offered the same insurance.
  • It is alleged that Goodman’s companies started shipping rotten beef (some of it 13 years old) to Iraq safe in the knowledge he would be covered by the taxpayer if the Iraq’s (not renowned for their patience) refused to pay.
  • The Iraqi’s refused to pay.
  • Larry Maith an Fearr got paid anyway.
  • The controversey brought down 2 governments as fianna fail scrambled to avoid blame.
  • A tribunal was set up. Cost a fortune. Went on years. Findings ambiguous and vague. Everyone claimed they were vindicated.
  • the journalist who broke the story was arrested after the tribunal for not revealing her sources.
  • she was later acquitted
  • Goodman is bigger and richer than ever. FF are still in government.

Isn’t there loads more around anti-competeitive practices that allowed him to put together a monopoly on beef processing?

I watched last week’s show.

A lad left Goodman’s company and set up a rival one. He did very well. A foreign business man looked to invest. He did and seemed to dupe the lad with an eventual takeover.

And who was behind the business man? Goodman.

He denied it as it would have been anti competitive. I am not sure how it finished up in the end.

I’m pretty sure that he pressurised farmers anti-competitively too. He controlled all the meat processing so set the prices. One of the things was that farmers had no option to go elsewhere with their meat because he would refuse to accept offal unless they sold meat to his plants at the prices he set. @KinvarasPassion might be able to explain.

The factories here are like a cartel. There’s only about 3 of them, they set the price and you like it or lump it.Plenty of small independent factories dotted around the country have been shut down thanks to Larrys buddies in the government.

Didn’t see the documentary yet but didn’t Goodman fall out with his brother?

His son owns a few pubs and restaurants nearby me. By all accounts, would you believe it or not, he’s an UUCOAM… Black cat, black kitten.
