Twice @Ambrose_McNulty is plenty
It’s a long term job Harry, you won’t see the effect properly until the 3rd year. First year you will see a little bit of progress 2nd year you will see a lot more grass than moss and the 3rd pretty much all grass and no moss
That’s outstanding mate
Baggsy a bag
Is the need for vegetable plugs and seedlings because it’s too cold to germinate seeds (without some sort of heating set up)?
I remember a lad from Ballysteen getting a taxi out from town one night and when he got home he realised he had no money to pay the driver. Luckily enough the taxi driver was a country fella, so my mate says to him, hang on there, went off into the shed and arrived out with two big bags of home grown spuds. Fired them into the boot and sent the taxi man on his way.
Laziness and convenience on my part at the moment. But you’d need a green house/tunnel or decent inside space to be trying to germinate seeds here.
Is it worth trying to germinate seeds beyond their use by date?
I found a box of various seeds I had forgotten about. Some of them 4 or 5 years out of date.
Absolutely it is, nothing to lose by giving them a go.
When I have out of date seeds, I broadcast sow them in one of the vegetable beds in between seasons. Let them grow a few inches as a green manure, then chop them to pieces, dig them in and the worms do the rest. Revitalised bed ready for sowing a couple of weeks later.
Did you find somewhere with plugs available to deliver?
No. Every where is sold out. Even a 2 week delay on seeds.
What are you after?
I’ve seeds on the way now, didnt need much as I’m only growing mostly in pots and small raised beds this year.
Have a mix of salad type stuff gone in and have courgette, scallion and a few other seeds on the way.
Also sorry I didnt pick up a few spuds.
Although my back field has never produced great spuds. Issues with a worm.
Grub worm?
Wire worm I think my father said it was?
You’ll never get shot of them if they are in the ground. A curse.
Absolute bastards of things
Planted the boxes with the kids today… They were delighted with them selves… I’ve already been asked 5 times are they up yet🙈
Any advice on how to treat a hedge that is not as green as it should be?
I place bone meal at the bottom of all the plants two weeks ago, and add a load of slug pellets to try and kill off the little bastard.
Next step I had planned, in a few weeks time, is to dig up around the bottom of each plant, place in more bone meal and compost.
Is there anything else I should be doing in the mean time like watering or using other stuff?
Is it a bit early yet to be worried about a hedge greening up?
I’ve a hedge that is looking terrible too but give it another few weeks it will be grand. I’d hold off for a few weeks yet or it could be unnecessary work in reality.
Ah it’s been shite for a few years and slugs have it eaten alive. Neighbours are having a similar problem.
