The advanced gardening thread

Right,

We moved in three years ago. Gardens were in an awful state, particularly the back. I would have thought there was feck all maintenance of the soil itself.

Weed and feed should help

You can get a treatment to spray on the weeds that wont kill the grass as well…as important tp get the grass growing up through the weeds

Feed as in a fertiliser?

Its called weed and feed…its like a fertiliser mix that does both jobs.

I have approx 2 x 2m section I’m going to stick a couple of crowns in if I can get them

Do you have a polytunnel yourself, mate? I heard they’re a bit of a hippy fad.

I’ve four plants put down this Spring. Any pointers Fagan?

More topsoil when things get back to normal, rotavator, mix , rake , tamp down- false turf if willing to spend

Time. Give them time. Once they take root there’ll be no stopping them. Just make sure they have enough water in dry spells

Have the same problem as @farmerinthecity . Raked it, cut it fed it… Was still shite this year… The other day I Hacked the shit out of the weeds, threw down a few seeds of some sort… Looks like golf practice ground now with all the divots… You reckon Top soil would help ? Not a chance I’m digging up and reseeding… Its north facing and small enough…

That’s hard lines I did what I wrote worked for me, but yes we’ve s fair bit of sun in the back alright, it’s v disappointing to put so much work in and nada, might be far out but if you got the soil tested you’d be able to balance out the acidity etc and at least have something to work on

Dunno what type of house you are in but a lot of the estates would have fuck all top soil on the gardens. Its basically a layer of clay and shite and the grass really struggles to grow well on it.

But you never rotavated I’m guessing, we moved into a new build and fuck me nothing grew in our tiny garden, I dug out all the builders backfill-( everything, plastic, mortar, finish, bricks etc)dug down 4/6 inches , rotavated the fuck out if it, got decent topsoil and seaweed , at last it produced, not perfect but I’m happy
