The advanced gardening thread

We really really did. I remember catching eight one day in Connemara. You’re more likely get a salmon these days, and that’s rare.

Bu jesus that was a good day.
I miss it so much. I used to fish with three of my best mates but I’d go off on my own as well. Told you’d never catch a white trout during the day, I caught a beautiful two pounder in a deep pool on the Slaney at 3 o clock in the afternoon on a wet line.

My godfather (who taught me fly fishing) and others like Derek Nally fought for years for the Slaney. To no avail now, from what I’ve been told it’s a disaster.
A lot of it comes from the netting in estuaries, in the case of the Slaney right up to Enniscorthy, which is just ridiculous.
Time and time again, study after study has shown the value of a rod caught (think German tourists) white trout or salmon is a factor of about 20 times more valuable to the economy than a net caught fish.
Climate change is a factor as well.
But the biggest problem is the utter non interest of politicians to take any action and listen to groups like SOS (Save our Sea Trout) and angling associations.
My godfathers son, one of my best mates, hasn’t been out fishing in over 5 years and it kills him. I find it hard enough to live here without it, I’d be driven mental at home with whats going on.

Yea, it fought so much I thought it was a salmon. Same thing, a deep black pool, but late at night.

(Now that I’m on a roll) We used to start around 8pm.and fish through to 11pm at which point the trout went off the boil.
Up the town to Deanes, walking in in waders which Ben Deane always loved (not) and a few pints and then back down around 1am (half cut which presents it’s own challenges for wading into a river). Always caught a few fish then.
Or up very early for a 6am fish. Good times.

I had the same thing one evening, had a fish that got under the bank. I thought I had a 20 pound salmon and it took 20 minutes to get the fucker near the net at which point I realised it was a 2 pound very pissed off white trout. And this waa in May.
They are unbelievable fighters
I released so many of them as well, I had such love and respect for them.

Two pounds is a nice trout where I come from.

Nice trout anywhere.

The corrib is a strange lake these days. Less pattern to it than there used be. Loads of lads only fish the mayfly which I simply can’t understand.
I always preferred the rivers.
Used fish near every day as a lad up and down the local river for browns. Never ever saw another person fishing it bar an odd lad I brought with me.

Climate change is a complete fucking cod. Amongst other things it’s meant to distract you from pollution caused by industry and industrial farming.

Ah that’s alright then

I was worried you wouldn’t have something to sustain yourself with for next winter when covid is done (:crossed_fingers:t2:)

I take it back. Climate does change

Planted the garlic before Christmas and kinda forgot about it.
Went back last week and it seems a dog had dug most of it up. Gutted as we are getting nice cold weather at the moment as well.

Mine is coming along nicely now.

Shite. You should replant, you may get a crop

I’m beginning to think I’ll have to give the garlic away. Terrible crop this year. The winters here are just too mild.
When I say mild, I mean it’s generally around 18-20 degrees during the day in winter and I can’t remember the last frost. We had a week towards the end of winter where it was hitting 30 degrees every day.
Same thing with tulips.
I’m giving the garlic and tulips one more go this year, but I may to accept the simple fact that climate change means I can’t grow these crops anymore.
I used to get a huge garlic crop and have pots full of tulips.

Get fucked @glenshane
