Doing the changeover from Winter to Summer vegetables. Picked a pile of the last of the winter stuff today, stewing the Rhubarb now.

Rhubarb is one of the kings of fruit and veg, not that it’s healthy by the time you can palette it :grinning:

Is Aussie rhubarb very skinny

I picked a fair bit today and a lot of it was pretty skinny, more to give room to other stalks to grow bigger. Probably picked a good kilo today. I have 6 plants and they produce wonderfully this time of the year.
Had to move one to make room for a Raspberry plant I bought on a whim at the garden centre this morning. Will be interesting to see how that goes.

I tried a single raspberry plant myself once with a single blackcurrant with it. The blackcurrant was a magnet for mildew and never fruited.

The raspberry only fruits on last years growth so I kept pruning out older growth but that never fruited either. So I gave up and dug them out. But the bastern raspberry kept coming back up for years like an old bramble.

These modern cultivars are shite.

My grass tree (Xanthorrhoea) has spiked and is flowering. It’s full of tiny native bees who love it. I could spend hours watching them.

Impressive!

I had to read about it there.
Is It wild collected?

Difficult to flower. It says bush fires promote flowering.
I hope you didn’t have one of those pass through,

Oh god no, you’re not allowed to do that. I bought it about 10 years ago. They’re understandable very expensive. They’re a fascinating plant.
They do regenerate with bushfires, but it’s not recommended for the average gardener to burn them. I just prune some of the growth. I love it though, it’s a real talking point plant in the garden.
They grow very slowly. You see grass trees in the nursery’s for hundreds if not thousands of dollars depending on their size and age.
This one was $80 10 years ago.

How many years to flowering?
It didn’t say that on the wiki page…

That’s the third or fourth time it’s flowered, I think I’ve had it 10 years, very slow growing.

Tomatoes flying, will have to start tying them in, they’ve been in the ground two weeks.
