What rockstar was that? Rod Stewart?
But as a player he was an absolute nobody
Robbie Williams
Speaking of Kevin Foley, another great & lost GAA aesthetic was the stick thin fella with the jersey hanging off him like a dress. Sox McInerney of Sixmilebridge was another great exponent.
The Scarecrow look.
Anthony O’Sullivan of Cork who was a substitute in the 1990 Munster hurling final was a lovely example of this.
The Cork susbstitutes that day were tremenjus. The awkwardness was dripping off them. O’Sullivan was still strapping up his helmet after going in to mark his man. Then he did a lovely thing where he did a few fresh air pulls right and left in the one movement as if he was cutting some sort of crop (I’m not a farming type) with a scythe or some such implement. Just to warm up the shoulders.
Then a few minutes later Cathal Casey comes in. He’s like Mr. Bean on the sideline. He has his socks up and ridiculous looking white tape around the lower part of his shins. He too is awkwardly strapping up his helmet, and he’s visibly shitting it at being asked to come on. His jersey is too small. Every person in the crowd is likely thinking “oh no, who this is sausage?” Frank Murphy literally shoves him onto the pitch. Then as Casey goes onto the pitch, he almost runs straight into the back of Gerald McCarthy, who is on the pitch calling Pat Buckley to come off. The resumption of play immediately after Casey coming on is a sideline ball. Casey is asked to take it. He completely scuffs it and in that moment likely wants the ground to swallow him. Then Paul Delaney comes in and tries to pick the ball up and makes a mess of it. Casey tentatively comes in, picks it up and then sidesteps Bobby Ryan, sends Ryan to the shops and sticks it over the bar. If ever a vignette demonstrated it was a team’s day, this was it.
It was a sadder day when he went on the snackboxes
I’d say the modern day gym culture has kind of done away with this phenomenon. I’d probably be a proponent of it still myself.
Casey had been around long before that, he was a supreme underage hurler and never let the seniors down, I suspect he may have been hampered by injuries as he would have been a starter for his entire career on ability,
I can’t believe Anthony O’Sullivan played that day, I’ve never seen that match
Kieran Duff had a ragamuffin look about him in his hay day
He did well to stay off them that long. Not the worst sort all the same.
I’m not surprised to hear that.
He was a very well known player at the time all the same. The hair, his style of playing, a loughnane type half time interview and rumours about him being a mad/bad cunt meant every gaa fan knew him.
He was in his hole ![]()
He had some tiny level of fame for inexplicable being named on the compromise rules team
The signs were already there about Colm O’Rourke being a spoofer.
Ah he was definitely well known laois were high profile enough with the minor teams. More his hair than his playing ability tbf but still
Trevor Giles and the sleeveless jersey was a trend that never really caught on
Diarmuid Connolly wearing the muscle top in the warm up of the greatest game of all time was iconic.
What was this?
