Modern forwards are generally conditioned to play for 60 minutes and then their replacements come on. Yesterday after 67 minutes Leinster had made 7 changes and Saracens 1, despite Saracens making twice as many tackles. Mako Vunipola hadnāt played in 5 weeks due to injury but stayed on until 70 minutes. Brad Barritt was due to retire in May but kept himself right over lockdown to put in a performance like that yesterday. It was an incredible display of defiance from Saracens.
I think Leo is in the mould of a Conor o shea type. More ceo than manger/coach.
Iāve been impressed with his team selection and thatās the most important aspect of management for me.
Itās easy in hindsight the chat about leinster having 2 or 3 options in every position caught them out. You really need to know your best 15 or 23. Leo didnāt seem to know that.
That Vincent o brien quote springs to mind if you think youāve got two derby horses in your yard you probably have none.
The notion Leinster have 3 hookers close to international standard or 9 back rows at international standard canāt be true when you think about it. You really need to know your best team and it looks like Cullen didnāt this season.
If they genuinely did have 9 backrows of international standard then 5 of them would be looking to move to England or France so they could prove themselves. The fact they would rather sit in the stands in Dublin on the big days tells you they donāt have the mentality needed. When players talk about what a big decision it is to move to Limerick or Belfast you see how soft they are.
Good reasons to stay in Dublin too though. James Ryan gets shown up everytime he comes up against Itoje, but within weeks itās forgotten about and he is described as world class again because he performed well against some Italian or other.
