The Ashes 2013/14

Boyd Rankin has made the touring party for England. Seems like a bit of a weird squad selection all around to me. Nine players picked themselves really (ten if you include Bresnan, who has not been named in the official squad but will tour if fit). In Finn, Tremlett and Rankin they have three very similar back up bowlers: all tall men that get bounce. The logic is understandable given there is more pace and bounce in Aussie pitches, but they seem to me to have got themselves into a bit of a cul-de-sac in their thinking. Ignoring Onions, whose numbers have been sensational in leading Durham to the Championship and who would have given a bit more balance to the party, just seems like the product of overthinking it.

The other big calls are firstly to take Carberry as the spare opener instead of Compton. This is another odd looking decision, and looks a bit spiteful. Compton publicly expressed disappointment when he was left out for the summer Ashes, but not in any real kind of a bad way. You could tell that it pissed Flower off though. Compton went away and kept on banging in the runs for Somerset, but has been ignored in favour of the older Carberry, who has scored far fewer runs in Division Two for Hampshire. He was also fairly dismal in the ODIs. He had a horror in the field against us and didn’t score many runs in that game or the series against the Aussies. The England setup keeps banging on about stuff like character; it reads to an outsider that they only want one type of character, who they can largely control and keep on message. It’s really contributing to my growing dislike of this England team, along with the horrible conservative brand of cricket they play most of the time (admittedly punctuated by spells of brilliance, often at key times). If KP was even marginally less talented than he is, I’d say they’d drop him at the first available opportunity.

Gary Ballance of Yorkshire the other big choice. Have to admit that I don’t know much about him. Only time I’ve seen him play was getting a second ball duck in Malahide. He’s been in the runs for Yorkshire though. Worth noting that he’s another African born player too; he grew up in Zimbabwe.

England squad: Alastair Cook (Essex, capt), Matt Prior (Sussex, vice-captain), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonny Bairstow, Gary Ballance (both Yorkshire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Michael Carberry (Hampshire), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Monty Panesar (Essex), Kevin Pietersen (Surrey), Boyd Rankin (Warwickshire), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Ben Stokes (Durham), Graeme Swann (Nottinghamshire), Chris Tremlett (Surrey), Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire)

No Eoin Morgan? I hope the Australians slaughter these cunts.

Morgan’s Test career is almost certainly over at this stage. Never really looked the part, and there are loads of middle order batsmen ahead of him in the pecking order now. Barely even plays Championship for Middlesex anymore. He’s pretty much a limited overs specialist now, though he still pays lip service to having Test ambitions.

He was never likely to be included. There’s several other middle order batsmen who didn’t make it, such as James Taylor, who would be ranked ahead of him for the longer format.

Another silly question.

I thought the Ashes just fucking finished? I wasn’t aware they held this lark twice a year.

This is a rather ridiculous one-off situation. Ordinarily they are held on a four year cycle, so that the Aussie Ashes would start 18 months after the English one (so 2014/15), and the next English one 30 months after that (2017). However, that cycle meant that the Aussie Ashes was always taking place just before a World Cup, and neither country thought that such an intense Test series was the best preparation for an ODI World Cup so they wanted to change things. The obvious thing would have been to push the Aussie Ashes back 12 months, and then keep the four year cycle going except with the gaps vice versa, i.e. Ashes in 2015/16 and then in 2017 in England. However, the Aussie cricket broadcast rights were up for renewal this year, and Cricket Australia wanted to make sure there would be an Ashes series in the contract up for negotiation, as that is the most lucrative one. So they moved the Aussie one forward a year instead (i.e. to 2013/14). Rather unbelievably, they are touring England again then in 2015. Don’t know if there is any real logic behind that.

England should really be touring South Africa this winter, which would be a much more enticing series to be honest than an instant repeat of the Ashes. Instead, CSA are being dicked around by the BCCI, so we won’t even get the SA-India series which would have been a decent substitute.

when is this on?

Is there a game in the Gabba?

First test 21st Nov. The Gabba is usually the first one.

It’s an interesting selection. Selecting Ballance is looking to the future I suppose. Would have thought Taylor was next in line but I think they believe he is a bit small. (But Bell is not a giant either). Bopara and Morgan can forget about it at this stage. Trott didn’t have a great series in England so a question mark over him. Compton probably discarded because he mouthed off a bit over being dropped. Not sure that Carberry is the solution. England going for pace, hoping that Tremlett who is injury prone can hit the form from 3 years ago in Oz. 5-0 Fitzy?

Here’s what I think @balbec

5-0 England. Michael Clarke t retire from test cricket at the end of it (where’s the undercover smiley gone?)

Carberry opening for the second warm-up game in a row. Importantly, Root is batting down the order here though with Cook back in the team. Looks like they’ve nearly made their mind up on that one. Compton must be seething. Bairstow not playing again, which is interesting as he didn’t play the first game either. Ballance batting at six, Bell will come in for him obviously. Tremlett getting the final bowling slot, he must be favourite for that now. They’ve another warm-up game before the Gabba, and I suspect that with the bowling slot in particular it’s still up for grabs to an extent.

Cutting and Copeland looking decent with the new ball here. Hussey commentating, McGrath has joined their team too.

Compton should have kept his mouth shut when he was dropped. Ballance needs a score. England would be better with Root at six.

Ah, he said bollocks all. Flower seems to run a fairly totalitarian reigime. Bell isn’t playing here. He’ll come in for Ballance, Root at six. Only four failures would do for Carberry from here I’d say.

True. Words criticising the selectors were straight outta Compton so to speak.

3/10

He tries hard in fairness.

England 318-0 at the end of first day against Australia A. Carberry and Cook scoring heavily against some pie throwers.

It is raining in Hobart. there may be no play today.

It’s all kicking off. The Australians are giving it to Jimmy big time. Jimmy has a word back to Bailey. And the umpires step in to try to cool it all down. Clarke tells Anderson to “get ready for a broken hand”. Nasty.

:clap::D:clap:
that’s fantastic from Clarke, fair play to Aussies, none of this gracious in victory PC " ah i suppose." bullshit, they are fucking sewing it into england here

They must be thrilled. They can go off an sing their gaylord team song now. I wonder will Clarke hang around for it?
