The Boat Race 2010

He is anti elitest. Yet he was privately educated and went to the London School of Economics

Definitely a commy baxtard if he went to the LSE. Or the son of a tyrant.

Absolutely gutted to have missed this live today but have been catching up on events via the web. What a memorable renewal of one of the great sporting rivalries. It’ll go down in folklore as one of the most infamous races of all-time, up there with Cambridge sinking in 1978.

Trenton Oldfield’s intervention was one of the most dramatic moments in British sporting history. Then the restart with Oxford having an oar broken. That was one of my favourite tactics in my rowing days, opposition crews, largely made up of Protestant ascendancy types or English students who failed to get the grades necessary for Oxbridge, were simply never prepared for hurling tactics.

And the drama still wasn’t over as Alex Woods collapsed, reminiscent of the 2002 race when Cambridge’s Sebastian Mayer collapsed on the final bend. I can’t help thinking that Oxford wouldn’t have been outfoxed so badly though if the great Dan Topolski was still coaching them.

Can’t wait for Trinners Regatta now in a few weeks time. Blazers will adorn the left bank of the Liffey for Ireland’s equivalent of Henley. Probably head down to Islandbridge on the bike for that one. I expect the legendary Dutch Olympian, friend of DUBC and all round larger than life character Rob van Mesdag will be in attendance as always. Rob’s continued attendance has been ever more vital to the success of the event given the absence in recent years of the late, great RB McDowell.

Great to see the lower-quality but no less competitive Irish equivalent of the Boat Race, the Gannon Cup, between UCD and Dublin University, returning to its traditional route tomorrow from Carlisle Bridge to the Guinness Brewery, starting at 2:15pm. Always one of the highlights of the Irish sporting spring.

But the real action will take place a couple of hours before that when the hilariously named Goonan Cup (for novice reserves) is contested upstream between Chapelizod and Islandbridge. As a two-times veteran of this race, it holds wonderful, wonderful memories for me.

sid,
would the Goonan cup be the equivilant of the Isis - Goldie race that preceeds The Boat Race?
.
The sporting summer is now soon to be upon us , The Boat Race, The FA Cup, The Championships at Wimbledon, The Open in July and not forgetting The British Lions following the voyage of Captain James Cook FRS, RN to the heathens of Australia at the requst of The Rugby Football Union., the mouth waters at the prospect

mickee - I’d say it’s at least five notches down from the Goldie-Isis race in terms of quality, as can be demonstrated by our painful defeat in my second outing in the race when the man in front of me caught a massive crab coming round the final bend with us in the lead and the race at our mercy after having recovered from a disastrous start. It’s an always unpredictable contest as the possibility of a banger or two being included in the boat is always there - hence our glorious and not entirely honest victory the previous year. But that’s the beauty of it - high jinks and shenanigans are never far away and who knows what will happen at around 11:00 tomorrow morning.

And the Ashes Mickee

A wonderful win for Dublin University in this year’s Goonan Cup. Apparently the race took place on Wednesday, not today. The risk of a capsizing and vital pre-race preparations for the big one being disrupted was obviously too great to hold the race this morning.

Pre-race coverage of the big one on BBC1 at the moment with the superb Claire Balding. I’d say Goldie and Isis will be taking part in the warm up race round about now.

Historian Dan Snow nicely describing Old Father Thames’ crucial role in the Empire.

And we’re off. Strong start from Oxford as we pass Craven Cottage.

Oxford have the advantage on Surrey here. Cambridge must, must, must stay with them until the bend turns back in their favour.

Henry Fieldman the Cambridge cox doing a good job here. Oxford could rue appointing a Colombian cox in Oskar Zorilla. These foreigners aren’t to be trusted.

Unsavoury language from Oskar Zorilla. That’s an unfortunate violation of etiquette. Unfortunately it looks like they’ll fucking win this now.

Oxford win.

Dan Topolski RIP.

A sad night for devotees of the great race.

We’re off in the 2017 edition.

Let’s go Cambridge, let’s go.

Any of our London posters supping Gin on the Thames watching this ??

Boats getting very close. We need to take these fuckers out.

That was desperate cox work by whoever our cox is.

Awful cox work cost us that race.

I’m seething.

Anybody know who won the Goldie v Isis race?
