The Brexit Thread

That’s glum. As a small island country isolated on the west of Europe we need to become more self sufficient in everything we can. Especially generating electricity. We need it for everything.

We are burning coal to bate the band. The Greens policies are a roaring success

i think we are at 43% renewables now for electricity

Ireland is in fairly good shape, you have a small population and a lot of wind.

How long is that averaged across

“Problem” with renewables is they need a backstop - via our interconnectors

in english please?

Electricity is less than 20% of total energy consumption, heating and transport are the two biggies.

You can’t rely on wind to blow (or not blow too much) so you need another energy supply as a backup to deal with that variable.

Our backup is interconnectora from UK and France so that’s a potential problem.

electricity is used for transport mate, how do you think cars move?

I see a proposal was granted permission in North Tipperary earlier this year for a good sized Solar Farm.

Another planning permission request has been looked into for another Solar Farm in West Tipperary but it appears to be drawing lots of issues with the locals ( why I can’t fathom ).

I’d assume larger scale Solar Energy probably best suited to Ireland, it offers an opportunity to farm sheep in tandem as grass can still grow in around the Panels at ground level.

Wind seems to be hit & miss inland especially.

Thoughts? cc @Little_Lord_Fauntleroy

What % of cars on Irish roads are EV? I bet it’s not 10%.

And cooling. Another advantage of our temperate climate is we don’t have to generally pay for AC.
