A thread to discuss the little things that mean a lot in business and how people look in front of their peers, subordinates and superiors in the workplace.
To kick this off I would like to garner opinion as to how one should sit during a business meeting? I would normally sit with my legs out in front of me but not fully outstretched, crossed at the ankles. I think it is an area where I could improve, any thoughts?
This is a very good idea for a thread. It’s an area many of us struggle in, and end up foostering around at business meetings when you suddenly become self-conscious and think “is this how I’m supposed to sit?”. This could be a game-changer.
It probably depends who you are meeting. For example, showing the sole of your shoe has long been an insult in Arab culture, so if your fellow attendees have given any clues that they have that cultural background, crossing your legs at the ankle could show a bit of sole and send the meeting plummeting faster than an exploded plane.
Feet planted firmly on the ground, un-crossed, might be the way to go, but is it displaying confidence or aggression?
More questions than answers, but I will drop in later. I have a business meeting at 11:30.
I sit in a lot of meetings every day and my default pose is like the below, albeit with shoes, and looking far less asian. Sometimes I’ll alternate and have my left ankle on my right knee.
Is it appropriate to have a screensaver/background picture on your laptop computer? i would have been of the opinion that the standard corporate logo should be suffice. We have an open plan office and aside from the GM nobody has an office*. One of the directors who is in his late 50s has a background picture of a holiday snap of adult son and I assume the sons wife fiancee/wife. It is truly bizarre carry on
I am still seething that I lost my office when we moved to a new location back in November
I made a light hearted comment in a meeting the other day which completely flustered the poor guy giving the pitch. He was stuttering and apologising for the next 10 minutes. I felt kinda bad afterwards.
Most people in my place of work would have a background image of some sort. Some go with kids etc.I use the below. I’ll give 10 likes to the person who can identify where it is.
I know people from land locked counties struggle with such an image but I can confirm that this is a beach and coastline. The quality of sand on the beach wouldn’t be anything to boast about but the overall location makes up for it.
