Seán Quinn has made a statement to gardai making allegations in relation to his former company Quinn Industrial Holdings (QIH).

The businessman met a senior officer at Carrick-on-Shannon station in Leitrim on January 5 by prior arrangement.

The Sunday night meeting happened at a time when the station was mostly unoccupied, with few officers on duty.

In his statement, Quinn said he wished to draw garda attention to a number of issues about QIH. He also placed on record his concerns about comments made by public figures that suggested he might have had some role in attacks on the company, which he has condemned.

Quinn worked for QIH as a consultant between 2015 and 2016 on an annual fee of €500,000, while his son Seán Jr was paid €100,000, until their departure following a dispute about the future ownership of the company.

The 72-year-old tycoon, once Ireland’s richest man before filing for bankruptcy in 2011, is likely to speak to detectives again in the coming months about his claims.

He has offered to make a further statement in order to assist both the gardai and the Police Service of Northern Ireland if required to do so.

The two police forces established a joint investigation team last year to pursue those believed to be responsible for attacks which began in 2011 after the Quinn Group was placed in receivership by the banks. A number of those suspected of involvement in some attacks between 2011 and 2015 are still working at QIH, according to police sources.

The joint investigation team is being assisted by the Criminal Assets Bureau and the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau, whose detectives are scrutinising financial payments involving persons of interest.

The National Bureau of Criminal Investigation has also been seconded to assist the cross-border operation.

Quinn is thought to have contacted Leitrim gardai, as opposed to the gardai at Cavan who are investigating the attacks on QIH, because he had previously been questioned by officers from Leitrim about a complaint made against him by John McCartin, a director of QIH.

McCartin had campaigned to have the companies returned to Quinn’s ownership, but his relationship with the former billionaire soured in 2015.

McCartin made a number of complaints about Quinn in September 2018, which prompted a garda inquiry.

Quinn denied any wrongdoing when questioned.

When contacted yesterday, Quinn confirmed he had made a statement to gardai in Leitrim but did not wish to comment further for legal reasons.

A garda spokesman said the force did not comment on ongoing investigations
