The Cost of Living 📈

Holy fuck. €17 for a carvery is extreme. €25 for Wow Burger. That can’t be sustainable.

What’s the rough cost of a bog standard quarter pounder with cheese meal these days?

You’d get that for less than a tenner a decade ago but now it’s well in the teens, isn’t it? Maybe varies based on location.

Restaurant prices are fairly mad too. 10-15 years ago in my D2/D4 living days, you could go to somewhere decent enough like The Chop House & a starter would be €7/€8 & the steak would be €20/€25. Now starters are up in the teens & steak before any sides are €40 or something.

I remember when it was 12 quid for a burger and a pint in the 51, then it went to 14 and now it’s 16 quid for just the burger. That’s in the space of about 5 years. So take into account a pint is 7 quid in there now that’s an almost 100% increase in 5 years for a burger and a pint. It’s not just the 51 obviously but that’s fucking criminal.

Was in a good standard but far from top of the range hotel in Galway during the week there meeting some relations and we ate in the hotel restaurant. Any kind of steaks or surf n turf was in the €36 to €38 range.

Minimum wage was €8.65 then, it’s €12.65 now.

I got a nawful shock when I did Eddie Rockets recently. You couldnt justify that sort of extortion.

In fairness Eddies was always an outlier. It probably nearly even seems reasonable these days

Its even worse. A rise of 30% or so for pretty much the same order since a year or two ago I’d reckon.

Yep and then double time with all these bank holidays. It’ll break pubs soon.

Surely a good barman would command well in excess of the minimum wage?

The proper lads in some of the Dublin Cathedrals must be on closer to 20 euro an hour.

Absolutely but the base pushes everything up.

Busy pubs have a lot of part time staff. Costs go through the roof during all these bank holidays.

youre getting mugged off bando, i just got a wowburger meal (had to run and get something between meetings) and it was 16.50

This is the one on my Uber Eats (I haven’t actually gone through with the self-inflicted mugging)

Could it be that you didn’t get a sundae which they might value at €8.50?

you are indeed correct, i did not get a sundae which wouldve increased the price of the meal by 33%

Empty Pockets the nephew used to call it.

He was on the ball when he came up with that.

There’s a savage mark up on them delivery apps.

Deliveroo charge restaurants a 35% fee per order so the cost of the food would be higher compared to dining in.

I doubt he came up with it. I’d say it’s a common enough nickname amongst the young.

Just looking at the 51’s website and a steak there only costs 21.95 which would be very good value in today’s climate.
