The Death of the GGA

This doesn’t add up Michael.

That’s true. But who pays for it?

Buck stops with parents.

I know some who do reject this, as hard as it is.

Both are lies

Mike is a known liar

Soccer vs GAA will play out differently in different parts of the country.
It’ll kill soccer in West Limerick where there’s a huge overlap between the two, but won’t have much affect on soccer in the city and may help it. Would hit city GAA clubs like St. Pats I’d imagine but wouldn’t have a massive effect on say NAP or Monaleen

Monty Mooney, Sheamie O Keeffe Martin Bolger, Johnny Kiely, Vinnie White, David Devereux, Robert Grogan, Tony Kelly, Brian Malone, David O Sullivan, Smiley Houlihan, Micky Grace, Pat Dermody, Paul Quiilty, Banjo Tobin, Cyril Rellis, Larry Savage and that’s just off the top of my head. I’d say mass youth participation in organized sport was a fleeting phenomenon for a couple of decades. In my time and my fathers time plenty of kids didn’t play sports and they weren’t encouraged to if they had no interest.

Young lads were needed to save hay in the summer in those days

Plenty of lads who had no interest in sport carved out a niche for themselves as cornerboys.

And I’m sure everyone thought yer generation was the worst thing that ever happened and were all clane useless

I wouldn’t be so sure about the overlap killing soccer in the west limerick area . Soccer has always been popular in the Desmond League . The underage structures are decent and many kids now aspire to making the Desmond League teams .

Hurling is in a perilous state in the west and football while strongish will face big challenges .

Ya the good lads are fine, but the overall participation will be decimated.

Now you have it.

I wouldn’t be so sure .

They are spending all their time indoors listening to their records, have you heard that rock music shite. What’s wrong with a bit of big Tom and the main liners? And their haircuts, and the funny clothes. I’ll tell you they wouldn’t have lasted 15 minutes in our day.

The father and the uncle used to have a great laugh about hamstrings. Nobody had a hamstring in their day.

Couldn’t afford them sure

This is a very very good little post that has left me lusting for more.

The selecting of galway hurlers over tge last few years was altered slightly to compete physically with dublin and Kilkenny, our two main provincial rivals after years, if not decades, of galway teams being often physically overmatched. For years a main jeer of galway was all we had was small tippy tappy hurlers. Minor, where we are by far and away the leading county, is primarily skill based, but you are suggesting we produce mullockers?

As for the difference between city and country hurlers, there isnt enough of a tradition of hurling in galway city to really notice to be honest

That’s a unbelievable post

Agree its parents fault. Wasnt disputing that. Just my primary point is/was the sports are less competing with each other now than they all are with inertia
