You’d wonder about any lad who buys that book. A pure wrong un
What I fail to understand is how he got away with being Kilkenny U20 boss in 2018/2019 when all this was going on. It was a high enough profile job so that if he was or wasn’t flying over to Seattle as he was supposed to have been it would have been copped.
During Covid it was probably easier to be missing and not be noticed although Cody had to have known something when he banished him to the Cusack Stand side for the Waterford match in 2020.
There was something very off about Kilkenny that day. Seven points up at half time and outscored 2-17 to 0-12 in the second half.
I listened to the author of the book speaking on the Irish Times podcast. Most of the stories she spoke about were already in the public domain.
She mentioned she had repeatedly asked Carey for his account and motives but he stonewalled her. She pursued him continously because she didnt really have anything revelatory without him or indeed without his family.
Also outfielded by Waterford for almost any ball in the air that 2nd half. I had never seen a Kilkenny team so aerially destroyed before
He did go missing for chunks of time apparently.
He was confined to a bedroom in the Lyrath for 7 weeks and couldnt leave because of Covid or so the story goes.
Barron, De Burca, Bennett and Gleeson were at the peak of their powers and absolutely phenomenal but it was a huge collapse all the same.
Colin Fennelly never played for Kilkenny again after it whatever happened.
Listened to her just there on news talk, it’s wild, he’s absolutely mental.
Anyone able to do the necessary?
There is a great autobiography in him. Might do it as it could be his only route to a few quid. I don’t think he is a simpleton, bit of a sociopath though. Re him being stupid, some of the stuff was ridiculous, like the google maps photos, but he’d have been getting desperate by then. He wouldn’t have been knocking around with who he was if he was a total fool, they wouldn’t tolerate him.
Would you have to pay tax on a gift or donation?
Yes gift tax (CAT)
Joe seems more exercised by the book than by DJ. He’s a narcissistic oddball.
Actually, come to think of it
What if it’s a genuine donation for medical help, like if his story was actually true?
He’s a serial liar and fraudster you couldn’t put any faith in an autobiography!
I dunno. I think all this is strongly linked to his fame and people probably tolerated odd and increasingly poor behaviour from him because of this celebrity. He transcended hurling in his prime. His first retirement was front page news. I don’t think there has been a more famous hurler barring Christy Ring and i’m not sure about that even.
In theory i think it would still be taxable but highly unlikely Revenue would challenge it I’d say
I’d be interested to read it, its a completely unique story as he was the first of his kind really.
JP had him teeing off with Tiger at the Pro Am and stuff, he surely can’t have been that much of a pest. The likes of Denis O’Brien was seeking him out to golf and pal around. He surely had something to him.
He has written an autobiography - I must root it out some day.
I suppose he was living a lie at that time though. I’d like to read one where he discusses all these compulsions. Every bridge has been burned, he’s free to say whatever. It could be a brilliant book. I wonder what would’ve happened if he golfed or played soccer instead with the financial rewards in those.
