The Great Managers Thread

Four Four Two have put together a list of the top 50 managers in the world. Not sure how much credibility they have as a magazine but I’ve noticed them putting a bit more work into their articles these days. It’s not Anglo-biased which is admirable for an English publication and it’s not click bait if I don’t include the links. Anyway, here’s their top 50:

  1. Florent Ibenge (DR Congo)

  2. Juan Carlos Osorio (Sao Paulo)

  3. Pavel Vrba (Czech Republic)

  4. Hein Vanhaezebrouck (Gent)

  5. Bruce Arena (LA Galaxy)

  6. Tony Popovic (Western Sydney Wanderers)

  7. Gian Piero Gasperini (Genoa)

  8. Slaven Bilic (West Ham)

  9. Herve Renard (Lille)

  10. Lars Lagerbäck (Iceland)

  11. Markus Weinzierl (Augsburg)

  12. Ange Postecoglou (Australia)

  13. Myron Markevych (Dnipro)

  14. Frank de Boer (Ajax)

  15. Rafael Benitez (Real Madrid)

  16. Manuel Pellegrini (Man City)

  17. Antonio Conte (Italy)

  18. Sergei Rebrov (Dynamo Kiev)

  19. Vicente del Bosque (Spain)

  20. Marcelo Gallardo (River Plate)

  21. Jocelyn Gourvennec (Guingamp)

  22. Giampiero Ventura (Torino)

  23. Didier Deschamps (France)

  24. Roger Schmidt (Bayer Leverkusen)

  25. Jorge Sampaoli (Chile)

  26. Dieter Hecking (Wolfsburg)

  27. Bob Bradley (Stabaek)

  28. Mircea Lucescu (Shakhtar Donetsk)

  29. Edgardo Bauza (San Lorenzo)

  30. José Pekerman (Colombia)

  31. Marcelino (Villarreal)

  32. Oscar Tabarez (Uruguay)

  33. Phillip Cocu (PSV)

  34. Lucien Favre (Borussia M’Gladbach)

  35. Louis van Gaal (Man United)

  36. Jorge Jesus (Sporting)

  37. Rudi Garcia (Roma)

  38. Ronald Koeman (Southampton)

  39. Leonardo Jardim (Monaco)

  40. Arsene Wenger (Arsenal)

  41. Laurent Blanc (PSG)

  42. Carlo Ancelotti

8 ) Joachim Löw (Germany)

  1. Unai Emery (Sevilla)

  2. Jurgen Klopp

  3. Massimo Allegri (Juventus)

  4. Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid)

  5. Luis Enrique (Barcelona)

  6. Pep Guardiola (Bayern Munich)

  7. Jose Mourinho (Chelsea)

I think Blanc is overrated there. So is Jardim who hasn’t really won much/anything. And I think you could make a case for Van Gaal being underrated.

Tim Sherwood is a glaring omission there.

Rare bit of insight into the Belichik philosophy. Don’t think I’ve ever heard him speak as freely.

thats with a lacrosse player isnt it? Think its a couple of years ago he did that. Was a good interview alright. Bill at times can loosen up with some interviewers, he can be quite good on his Monday mornings on WEEI as well, although I havent heard as many of them this season.

I felt at the time Postecoglou was underrated on this list and I stand by that view.

Definitely a great character.

I nearly gave up on soccer during his tenure at man united but he was absolutely priceless in post and pre game interviews.

The time he called Neil custis of the sun the fat man was a personal highlight.

Fuck sake, that’s shite news.

Since December 2015, I cannot see a mince pie without it reminding me of Louis van Gaal.

In the same way, when I hear the word “velocity” I immediately think of Kenny Dalglish, when I hear the word “flowers” I think of Brian Clough, and when I hear the words “love it” I immediately think of Kevin Keegan.

Only the true managerial greats are able to trigger such reminders.

Did Strachan use that word when a Sky TV reporter asked him for a quick word?
