Local farmers are objecting to an application the billionaire’s resort has made ahead of the international golf tournament

JP McManus’s preparations for the 2027 Ryder Cup golf tournament have led to a spat with local landowners.
The billionaire racehorse owner and gambler, who is also known for his financial support of Limerick hurling, has been strategically acquiring tracts of land near his Adare Manor Hotel and Golf Resort in Limerick ahead of the event in three years’ time.
Last year, the firm behind Adare Manor acquired an 8.33 hectare site adjoining the resort from a local farmer. In 2022, roads on the site were used by people attending the JP McManus Pro-am to access car parking.
In 2019, the property was announced as the venue for the Ryder Cup in 2026. Due to the tournament being cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, the event was pushed out to 2027.
The announcement was a major coup for McManus personally and Limerick, with the tournament potentially generating a €200 million economic boost for the region. The most recent Ryder Cup in Europe, which took place in France in 2018, was estimated to be worth €240 million to the local economy.

Adare Manor Hotel and Golf Resort: the Ryder Cup tournament could potentially generate a €200 million economic boost for the Limerick region

The billionaire’s resort has asked Limerick council for permission to retain the use of the widened entrance onto these lands and the lengthened roadways connected to the resort.
The application said the road would only be used for farm use and not as an entrance to the resort, however, neighbours of Adare Manor have told Limerick council they are concerned the lands will again be used for events at the resort.
One submission to the local authority said the roadway was used by more than a thousand cars a day during the JP McManus Pro-am golf tournament and became a “significant traffic hazard”.
Limerick council has granted permission to McManus to use the roadway in any capacity, but that decision has now been appealed by two local landowners to An Bord Pleanála.
Breda Mann and Michael Mann, who own a site adjoining the roadway, said the road has resulted in water draining onto, and flooding of, their property. They added that planners should order Adare Manor to remedy this issue.
The Manns’ appeal also said that Limerick council’s decision to allow use of the roadway should be struck out because it permits the removal of hedging from property not owned by Adare Manor.
A decision on the appeal is due from An Bord Pleanála at the end of April.
McManus acquired Adare Manor Hotel and Golf Resort in 2014 for a reported €30 million. His firm has invested an estimated €50 million to upgrade the property.

Some amount of people think they’ll get easy money out of jp by being awkward.

He didn’t become one the richest people on the planet by handing out money to a few plebs.
