Anyone ever get Solar PV?
Got a quote for 6.7kw system with an Eddi …no battery. My back roof is south west facing
11k after the grant from a reputable supplier
Seems like a good investment when I do my sums
Get a battery. I’m thinking of getting a second one. What’s an eddi?
A Reader. Vital here.
Eddie is basically an immersion working off the solar to heat your water.
The no battery is an issue, would be better overall if you had it, but it would add 4k to the price. Also remember that anything you export to the grid (18c/unit) will be taxed at the higher rate.
I’m not sure it will be as viable in the next few years with cheaper wholesale prices of electricity on the way.
Jesus I hope you’re right
Cheers for that. I had a good chat with the rep and he didn’t think I needed the battery as somone home all day most days so could use a lot of what was generated with change of use patterns eg dishwasher and washing machine etc during day instead of night…
The taxation of the export is a stones alright.
Id say your right about the electricity rate but I wouldn’t bank that and underlying it all I can’t see the solar instal cost getting cheaper over time…what does
What is main benefit you see in the battery. I felt it would be useful if you had an electric car the rep said not really it wouldn’t come close to filling the car battery
The market is moving to cost per kWh based on demand… The main selling point is that you use the grid when rates are cheap 10am to 4pm and you use the battery when grid rates are at peak cost 4pm to 8pm.
In addition to this it might actually make sense to charge your battery from the grid between 2am and 6am when rates are cheap and use the stored energy again between 6am and 10am when rates are get more expensive.
All this looks fine on paper but it requires companies to roll out more flexible smart price plans.
What mechanism is there to schedule the battery usage like that, can you program that from the inverter?
At this time of year my battery is full by about 11am. Any excess is sent back to the grid for a low price. We use the battery to power the evening usage, etc.
In short, If you didn’t have a battery you’d be exporting any excess electricity to the grid at a low price during the day and importing it that evening at a higher price.
