The Island, it is silent now

But the ghosts still haunt the waves

On an Island in the sun, we’ll be playing and having fun

Baby, when I met you there was peace unknown
I set out to get you with a fine tooth comb
I was soft inside
There was something going on

Take me and break me and close all your windows and doors.
Shut me off, cut me off, make me an island, I’m yours.
Take me away from the world, take me away from the girls.
Take me and break me and make me an island, I’m yours.

Stop off at Ardglass for a couple of jars of
Mussels and some potted herrings in case
We get famished before dinner
On and on, over the hill and the craic is good

And a torch lights up a famished man.

Who’s fortune could not save

Did you work upon the railroad?

Apparently Chevron wanted to record the ‘fear of priests with empty plates’ line with a more direct reference to ‘kiddy-fiddling’ but the record company stopped it.

Apparently.

There was an acoustic version of this song by a young lady on Nationwide of all the shows last night. It is stuck in my head since.

Our bellies full, our spirits free, we break the chains of poverty.

And we dance.

Majestic.

Then in the last verse.

A reference to celebrating the land that makes us refugees. The fear of priests etc

Sums Ireland and the Irish up in a nutshell.

It is one of my all time favourite songs.

It’s truly brilliant.

My favourite Pogues song

That’s only a few lines I’ve mentioned. You could quote the full five minutes of it.

Apparently MacGowan wouldn’t sing the line about Brendan Behan dancing up and down the street because he was his hero and didn’t want to bring up a potential homosexual reference.

Although Chevron was gay so he insisted. And by all accounts MacGowan and Chevron were good mates.

I got into a 2 hour argument one time with a lot of drink taken when I insisted Mr Cohen Times Square favourite bard was Leonard. The auld lad I was arguing with said it was some other guy called George or something.

He was right !
