Being a lover of lists of all kinds I’ve become an avid reader of The Guardian’s brilliant feature “The Joy of Six”. http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/series/joyofsix
Post 6 choices on any random topic of your choice, it can be sporting or otherwise. Be as creative as you want. They don’t have to be in order but can be if you so desire. Reasons for your choices are optional. I’ll start it off.
Six of the world’s most atmospheric football stadiums
I’ve never really liked that goal that much for some reason. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lovely strike and I can see why people appreciate it, it just never struck a chord with me. Lots of people rate it as one of the best ever (because of the circumstances and importance etc) which is fair enough but I just think it’s a nice strike and that’s about all.
Might be because I was up for Leverkusen that day. Also was playing a match of association football so didn’t see the goal live and had already heard radio presenters gushing over it and it didn’t live up to the hype for me.
Ah I think it is a piece of class, considering that he isn’t coming onto or attcking the ball and it is his weak foot as well…plenty of lads could try it and would end up with a fresh air swing or slicing it badly…It is perfect technique…
That was an excellen Leverkusen team and I would have loved to have seen them win also.
I saw that goal live and it is one of the few goals that I have seen that I went ‘Holy fuck’ afterwards. The technique was incredible - the ball was behind him, hit on the volley and with his bad foot and all.
I don’t think I have ever seen a better goal to be honest.
EDIT - The Rivaldo goal was incredible as well. Bicycle kicks are always class.
Yeah fair enough, shows you how good he is that I wouldn’t even have noticed it was his weaker foot. Saw it on that documentary that was mentioned on here recently and was more impresed with the goal than I had been before because in slow motion you really appreciate how long he has to wait for the fucking thing. It’s a great strike, just not one I like that much. (A bit like Thatcher with the miners).
City winning LOI in 2005. Unbelieveable atmosphere for such a small ground.
Beating Kerry in Killarney in 1987 Munster Final replay. My childhood changed that day.
Beating Kerry by 500 points in Munster Final 1994, and some of the gates being locked to keep the Kerry fans in(a total safety hazard, but back then… .
Beating Clare in Munster Final in 2003, the signing of the banks with 3 minutes left was special. Tainted a little by further strikes.
Beating Killkenny in 1999 All-Ireland, the rain, the young team, DJ scoreless…brilliant
Beating Meath in 1990 All-Ireland Final, everything went wrong, just so it could all go so right.
