Just seeing your post now, a tremendous effort WTB. Some great memories there to run over on the lunch time.
I would have had Clare V Kilkeny from 1998 as number one
Don’t mention the war. That wouldn’t have been a ‘great’ match-up as such, rather it was a travesty we were denied our rightful crown that year. They had to pull out every trick in the book to stop us the cunts. An inter-county ref who ‘forgets’ that the game is seventy minutes long.
Yeah…
Good one…
Yeah I certainly think Clare would have won alright. You could also say though what if Wexford had beaten Kilkenny in 1993 or Offaly in 1998, would they have won those All-Irelands, they are two other intriguing ones. Clare-Kilkenny in 1998 in the final is another obvious one I missed out on. I think Clare would definitely have won that.
Regarding the “moments that turned All-Ireland hurling finals”, I’d have Benny Dunne’s sending off ahead of the penalty. That for me was the moment Tipp lost their grip. To apply the same criteria that’s been applied to Paul O’Connell on here lately, I don’t think it’s too unfair to say that Dunne cost Tipp that All-Ireland. He certainly drastically lessened their chances.
The definitive moment that turned a final for me is when Galway’s Martin Naughton went through one on one with Ger Cunningham in 1990. Cunningham stood up really well and the ball hit him full in the face and went out for a 65. Except the umpire waved it wide. The Cork backs are rushing in to congratulate him and Cunningham has a big cut on his face and still the umpire waves it wide and the referee John Moore doesn’t overrule him. Galway were about six points up at the time about ten minutes into the second half and a goal probably would have killed the game. That was a real turning point as Cork fought back and won it, best final I’ve ever seen that one.
Clare v Wexford '96 also.
Only one on this list for me
Down versus Leitrim, All Ireland Final 1994
If only Leitrim had kept the wonderful start going against the Dubs where they lead 3 points to 1. If only they had switched Fergal Reynolds off Dessie Farrell sooner, if only the entire Dublin team, and subs, got injured and couldn’t play on thus forfeiting the game.
If only…
You can never know for sure obviously but I would still have the penalty there first. Tipp were only a point up when Benny got the line, ten minutes later they were two points up and not only that, but they were still very much on top. The penalty was what broke them. Kilkenny were starting to look nervous and to be fair, the ref just handed them a way back into the game.
A bit like Clare in '92. To be fair though, Clare had a perfectly good goal disallowed, and two of Dublin’s goals had question marks over them. One of Vinny Murphy’s goals was definitely a square ball. Of course, regardless of what happened Donegal were going to win that final. It would have been nice though.
No way. Clare would have won that one handy enough I think.
I’d have Kilkenny v Tipp in 2001 as #1
That would have been my initial thought Piles but I’m not sure. KK, although a poor team compared to the current one, underestimated Offaly that year. Were it Clare it would have been a totally diffferent game.
Clare had a trying year and were fierce unlucky not to make the final so I still reckon we wouldn’t have got within 6 points of them.
That KK team wasn’t nearly good enough to put it up to them.
I’d agree with you there. After the year they’d had they’d have found the extra gear when they were that close to the finishing line. That Kilkenny team were improved but not drastically improved from the team Clare had beaten comfortably enough the year before. It’s a shame because had Clare won that All-Ireland Loughnane wouyld have stepped down and things would have been freshened up much sooner than they were. The team that Cody’s Kilkenny faced in '99 were a pale shadow of the team of the previous two years.
Best final I have ever seen for excitement . John Kearns made a similar if not quite as spectacular save in the football final the same year. Think it might have been from Stafford of Beggy.
