The Liverpool Thread

Strange as it is for me to be restarting this thread, was wondering if anyone knows the correct pronunciation of “[Dirk] Kuyt”. (keep it clean, Ox)

I’ve heard it pronounced as “Kite” and “Koyt”, and on Wednesday the Newstalk 106 correspondent was laughing at the PA in Lansdowne for pronouncing it “Koot” when, he said, “it should of course be “Kowt”.Like Johann “Crowff” [Cruyff]”. I’m thinking however it should be “Koyt”, as I’d always heard Cruyff pronounced as “Croyff”. Anyone know for sure?

It’s more like Kaite.

When Hamilton was commentating on a Holland game during the world cup(think it was the portugal game) he was calling him “Kowt” but only once called him “Koyt”. Houghton started out referring to him as “Koyt” but soon hopped on the bandwagon with Hamilton and changed to “Kowt”.

Anybody know any dutch people to get clarification on it?

Suppose it depends what your line of work is.

It’d be perfectably acceptable work attire for, say, Stephen Gerrard.

What the fook do you do for a living sam?

Working with a skobie like that and a cleaner covers for you while you’re on holidays?

Mr and Mrs Steamboatsam would be so proud.

Said in my EPL preview that I wish Liverpool would go out and attack teams instead of being overly tactical. We had it again yesterday when they equalised (after that cheat Gerrard dived for the penalty - yeah ‘foreign’ players like Carvalho are really ruining the game you hypocrite) and Benitez then brought on Pennant for Fowler and settled for a point. Why was Crouch left on the bench after scoring twice in midweek? Baffling to me. Any Liverpool fans want to take that up? Did I mention I hate Steven Gerrard by the way?

Don’t forget his dive before the World Cup against Hungary which the English media actually praised him for, fkin twats. No respect for him, think he’s a bottler and despite the fact I’m no Roy Keane fanatic I don’t think he’s fit to clean the mans boots. Comin out last week moaning saying things weren’t right under Eriksson - come out and say it at the time then, fkin gibber.

Think thats a bit harsh, he didn?t even go to ground. Whether it was a penalty or not (and I?m going to say that it was deserved) you cannot blame Gerrard. Its the refs decision and while there was little contact it was a blatant lunge which disturbed a good goal scoring opportunity. Lucky not to get sent off imho as he was the last man back.

Dive against Hungary was a disgrace I agree but I don?t agree with him being called a ?bottler?. Did you not watch that game in Istanbul in the CL final in 2005 or the FA cup final last May? In both of these games he was influential in turning probable defeat into glorious victory. These are just two occasions (important ones at that) of many where he has shown ?bottle?. He has proven time and again for Liverpool that he is a great player and has been a great captain and leader of the team. I certainly don?t think he lacks ?bottle?. As for the comments with regards Eriksson, what would it have achieved if he spoke out? Probably wouldn?t have played in WC2006 ala Roy Keane WC2002. While I was fully supportive of Keane at the time I don?t think there are many players out there who would stand up like that and threaten their own opportunity to play for their country. Also it is more of a captains responsibility to communicate the players views to the manager and in this regard Beckham should take a fair share of the blame.

Not sure what his reasons were for this, probably thinking about the CL qualifier next week. I don?t like it when managers start resting players this early in the season. When you?re up against Chelsea every point is valuable and you can?t afford to drop point against the weaker sides.

Gerrard sat on his ass with his arms outstretched appealing for a penalty. You weren’t touched so get up you cheating fook! Shameful carry on.

I do agree that it’s ridiculous protecting players at this time of the season. They’re surely chomping at the bit and dying to get as much games as possible. Even if he wanted Crouch to be fresh for the CL game he surely could have brought him on for the last 10 mins, no?

F**k him, he’s a bottler. And don’t Liverpool fans remember he was dying to join Chelsea not so long ago? Misunderstanding my sh!te, he was after Roman’s roubles and nothing more.

Gerrard could have joined Chelsea but chose not to as I recall.

On Saturday he tried to maintain his footing and couldn’t. I think there was contact but couldn’t be sure. He has been known to dive though and I don’t condone this in any way.

As for Sarah-Lou, I hear she’s on the rebound.

Whats wrong with looking for a penalty if you genuinely believe you deserve one? As I said the lunge ruined a good goal scoring chance and even without contact was deserving of a penatly. It was not a dive as he tried to stay on his feet. I think people looking for a penalty after a dive is a disgrace but I don’t beleive this was the case here.

Could have, Would have…bla bla bla. What team was he playing for Saturday?

DT

PS. BT you must be devasted Charlie Stubbs is getting his claws on Sarah Lou!

There was no contact whatsoever. As Neil Warnock said on MOTD2 tonight how far do you go with this intent thing? Do you apply intent all over the field or just in penalty situations? He said Morgan’s intent was to make a last ditch tackle on the ball but a penalty was given by a referee second guessing what his intent was, i.e. intending to bring Gerrard down rather than intending to win the ball cleanly.

In a case like that I see things as being fairly clear cut. He wasn’t touched, he went through and scuffed his shot and the keeper saved it. The goal scoring chance was not ruined, rather Gerrard missed the opportunity and then sat down and asked for a penalty. Because he is one of the Holy Trinity (along with Lamps and JT at Chelsea) the ref gave them one. Shocking decision.

No way a penalty should have been given. In certain circumstances I agree with the “intent” principle but as Bandage has alluded to - that should be when the intent is to commit the foul, not just the intent to tackle. If there was definite intent to foul Gerrard as the referee ruled then there is no option other than a red card. I hate the idea of referees compromising. Make up your mind and stick to it. That’s why it frustrates the fuck out of me when people say he should apply some common sense and not send the lad off because he’s given the penalty or whatever. It allows referees to make these half-way house decisions when they’re not sure so they give half the punishment. It’s a cop out.

The only reason Gerrard stumbled was because he took the shot too early with his right foot having just skipped past the challenge. There’s a difference between vaulting an attempted foul (Caniggia against Cameroon in Italia 90 when the 3 lads could have been red carded IMO) and skipping past a genuine tackle. The defender doesn’t have to get out of the way, he tries to tackle, makes no contact and Gerrard shoots off-balance and fecks up. The reason he was off-balance was because the defender didn’t step out of the way, not because he made a wild lunge.

I’m not sure it shoud have anything to do with intent. If he didn’t get the ball then shouldn’t it be a foul having come accross the player? Many players would have played for contact in that situation. Would a penalty have been deserved then? I think the rules are fairly ambiguous on this one and its tough for the referees to call when you have plenty of players diving and trying to trick him. Genuine frees can sometimes get ovelooked because of this. I don’t think liverpool could complain too much if it wasn’t given yet I still think it was the correct decision.

DT

Different rules for the big teams as opposed to the lesser ones. Ridiculous penalty given against Watford too but it’s not shocking as it happens in all sports and it’s been happening for years.

I don’t think the fact that a defender doesn’t make contact with the ball should always result in a foul. If the challenge was reckless to the point where he had little or no chance of getting the ball and his primary aim was to stop the attacker at all costs, then he has committed a foul. However, if he makes a reasonable effort to play the ball and doesn’t play the man either then I don’t think it should be a foul. Whether there is intent or just an absence of caution (i.e. recklessness) is crucial in my opinion. Otherwise the defender has to get out of the way because Gerrard has pushed the ball past him and the defender hasn’t played it.

Not sure on the actual rule itself.

Congratulations to Liverpool for making it through to the group stages. Looked very good down the wings last night with Pennant and Gonsalez but they have a shaky defense. That guy Agger is pish.

I was gutted when the keeper made that save after about 80 mins. Had ?20 on Haifa at 13/2. Wasn’t impressed by either winger myself pagey. That guy Garcia cracks me up, he hides, pulls out of tackles and still could have had a hat trick in the first half alone. He reminds me of a real timid fook that used to play U-12 hurling with us. He wouldn’t challenge for any ball because he was a coward, he’d just stand motionless in corner forward, allow the defender attack the ball, wait for the poor useless fook from some bogger team to miss it completely and then gather it and tap it over the bar. He is gash so he is.

Couldn’t agree with you more on that muppet Garcia. Some fans love him cause he has got some important goals in the past, the thing is for every goal he scores he probably misses a dozen sitters. A waste of space imho. We managed to get rid of Traore and Cisse, now we just need to get rid of Garcia.
