I remember watching the FA Cup highlights on BBC’s now defunct midweek Sportsnight (or was it Sportsweek? cc @Sidney) programme the night @briantinnion famously scored for the Robins at Anfield to dump Liverpool out. I think it was during the Souness managerial era but I’m open to correction on that.

Sports(night/week) would invariably have some boxing from York Hall or Bethnal Green with Harry Carpenter on commentary. They’d often show highlights of one or two games, then skip to the boxing for ages and let the viewer know that highlights of the remaining football games would be later on. You’d have a little task to convince your auld lad to let you stay up to catch the rest of the football at the end. Sometimes the boxing would be from King’s Hall in Belfast with Jim Neilly on commentary duties.

The York Hall is Bethnal Green, mate.

As well as FA Cup replays, a typical Sportsnight might have included brief highlights of a Skol Cup semi-final, an amateur boxing international, greyhound racing from Catford, UK Championship snooker from the Guild Hall or the Benson & Hedges Masters from Wembley, a feature with skiing’s Bell brothers, Martin and Graham, a rugby union segment featuring a review of winter test matches and midweek tour matches and a look ahead to the final challenge featuring the Barbarians, and a horsey racing segment with Julian Wilson interviewing Martin Pipe or some other horsey racing manager.

I was pleased to see Bristol City sporting the iconic purple jersey/green shorts combo as their away kit again this season.

Whatever happened to Steve Ryder after his ill-fated move to ITV?

Is he alive?

Is he still a sport broadcaster?

Still involved in F1 related interviews & documentaries.

Super save there from Steele to keep them in the game here against promotion rivals Derby

Stonewall peno forDerby not given.

1-0 lost to Cardiff City in the Severnside derby. 6 points from the last 27 on offer for Bristol City.

Pep down in the West Country tonight.

I’d bloody love to be at the Gate tonight.

I was there before it was redeveloped, around 20 years ago, tidy ground.

Pep showing huge respect for Bristol City and the competition

I had an aunt who lived in Bristol. When I was a kid, we went down to Bristol for a long St Patrick’s Day weekend in 1978. That was the season Spurs were in Division 2. Spurs were away at Bristol Rovers that weekend and we went along. Spurs won 2-3. We’d beaten them 9-0 at home earlier that season. Bristol Rovers were playing then at Eastville, which also doubled up as the premier greyhound racing venue in Bristol.

Bristol City had a few seasons in Division 1 in the late 70’s, they haven’t been back since. We went down to Ashton Gate as well for a game around Christmas time. Spurs won 1-3.

I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for both Bristol teams. Probably Rovers more so.

For their brilliant jersey’s alone I was always a Pirates man. Cousins from Bristol always supported Rovers. The ‘Gas’ may be the bigger club in the City, but they’re fucking scum imo.

Was there one player who scored a good few goals in the 9-0 and didn’t do a lot more after.

New signing from Torquay, Colin Lee scored 4 goals on debut. Ian Moores scored a hat-trick.

That 9-0 win over Bristol Rovers is Spurs record league win.
