I posted an article from Tim Vickery on page 1 of this thread a few days after Argentina’s friendly victory over Germany. He gives an overview of the tactics deployed by Diego on the night. I am not sure if I totally buy into it but it is an interesting observation nonetheless.
This is a long shot now, but there is a good chance there has been more money put on England than Holland. This tends to influence the bookies from time to time as well.
Here is a post I read earlier on one of the Villa sites. Sums it up well. James Milner is a central midfielder too.
Ashley Young can rightly feel aggrieved not to be in the 30.
There are 2 common myths - 1 that he has had a chance and failed to take it. Wrong. He has 7 caps no full games, 1 start brought off at half time, and 6 apps as a 2nd half sub (one for 3 mins) - hardly chance to establish yourself at International level. (SWP has 30 caps, Downing 21 etc). Ash deserves a proper chance.
Myth 2. he has lost his form this season. Again wrong - he may not have been as devestating as the previous year, but he has still be a top performer - and the stats back up his performances - and outshines his peers.
Apps Goals Assists
Ash 45 9 16
Johnson 16 1 5
SWP 30 4 7
Theo 30 4 3
Cole 26 2 5
Lennon 30 3 12
In short, he plays more, he scores more, he creates more.
He’s got the best delivery in the premiership, can play down either flank.
Clearly Capello doesn’t like him. But as a Villa fan I hope he has a long restful summer and comes back in August raring to go.
England’s loss, Villa’s gain.
As for Gabby, 16 goals from open play is decent going but apart from just goalscoring where admittedly he is no finished article, his hold up play is better than any other English forward apart from Rooney. His pace too would be a serious asset forcing teams to defend deeper and with him there is always the chance he will force a red card or penalty. I dont think people realise how poor Heskey has been this season. Crouch too hasnt been any great shakes. Defoe has hit the skids big time and a lot of his goals came from the spot too. That leaves Bent who knows where the goals are and I reckon is a good sub to bring on but hasnt much else to his game in truth.
Milner plays anywhere across the midfield. He’s only been converted during this season and don’t believe he has played there for England. I think we’re better off comparing apples with apples so the stats I provided are solely based on the Premier League and disprove your statement that in terms of goals and assists Young is way ahead of every other English wide player. I’d agree that Young hasn’t really gotten a chance at international level, and I don’t think he’s a bad player at all but I do think the others that got in ahead probably deserve to, except for Theo Walcott, who like Agbonlahor is a headless chicken with raw pace. Haven’t seen any evidence of Agbonlahor’s hold up play. For England, Crouch’s record is class and he’s a different option. Similarly, Defoe has had a good season (better than Agbonlahor) and importantly has done the business for England - a similar but better player than Agbonlahor. Bent is similar again and probably out of his depth at international level but scored more goals than Agbonlahor in a struggling Sunderland side. Heskey’s ability as a second striker/hold up forward is far superior to that of Agbonlahor. I’d have Cole in ahead of Agbonlahor too. In summary, Young may have some cause for complaint, Agbonlahor does not.

Comments (0) Add to My Stories John Terry’s World Cup dream is in serious doubt after the Chelsea captain was rushed to hospital having suffering a suspected broken metatarsal in training.
It compounds a horrendous year for the defender following off-field revelations surrounding his private life and he is OUT of the Barclays Premier League champions FA Cup final clash against Portsmouth at Wembley this weekend.
The news comes as a further blow to England manager Fabio Capello, with serious injury doubts over midfielder Gareth Barry and skipper Rio Ferdinand
It looks as though JT is fine, unfortunately. That’s the second time this week that my hope and vision of a better Britain has been cruelly dashed after Monday’s brief prospect that the Tories would be left opposition in once again.
“When I go to sleep at my daugher’s house in Rome, I go to sleep with a poster of Totti looking me in the eyes, and I wake up to the same image. The apartment is completely Romanista. My grandson Lorenzo has been brainwashed by his cousins, and now there’s a poster of Totti that follows/haunts me. I had to check if he could play but he has made his decision.”
Totti’s absence is likely to rule out an Italian victory but I still fancy them to get to the last 4.
