Government TD blames āfornicationā for unwanted pregnancies
Thursday, April 19, 2012 - 01:08 PM
A Fine Gael TD said today that fornication is the āmost likely causeā of unwanted pregnancies in Ireland.
Mayo TD Michelle Mulherin made the remarks during a debate on proposed abortion legislation in the DƔil.
āAbortion, as murder, therefore sin, which is the religious argument, is no more sinful, from a scriptural point of view, than all other sins we donāt legislate against, like greed, hate and fornication, the latter, being fornication, I would say, is probably the single most likely cause of unwanted pregnancies in this country,ā she said.
āThe State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.ā
I see the priest who had the gay porn on his memory stick and unwittingly showed it at school had a break-in a week later and had his laptop stolen. How convenient!
Church threatens complaint over DāArcy commentā¦
THE Catholic Church will make a formal complaint to the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) unless Today FM apologies for derogatory comments made on air by presenter Ray DāArcy. The radio broadcaster told listeners on his morning radio show on Friday that the Catholic Church had in many ways āf***ed up this countryā. Mr DāArcy had been reviewing newspaper coverage of comments made by Fine Gael Mayo TD Michelle Mulherin, who caused controversy with the use of the term āfornicationā, which she claimed was the biggest cause of unwanted pregnancies. But a spokesman for the Catholic Communications Office demanded the broadcaster apologise for the offence caused to āthe Catholic faithfulā, or a complaint would be made to the BAI. In correspondence to the station, Martin Long, of the Catholic Communications Office, branded the comments grossly offensive and factually inaccurate. āAll those who hold the Catholic faith dear are deeply insulted by this appalling language,ā Mr Long wrote. āBy any objective or subjective measure, lay and religious members of the Catholic Church have and continue to contribute to the common good of our society, particularly in the areas of poverty, social justice, health and education.ā A spokeswoman for Today FM said no decision had been made on what the station would do, but said a meeting would take place this morning prior to going on air between programme director Tom Hardy, Mr DāArcy and producer Will Hanafin. Today FM said Mr DāArcy could not be reached yesterday for comment. On his morning show on Friday, Mr DāArcy said that āthe marriage of the state and the Catholic Church is part of the reason we are where we are todayā. Mr Long claimed the remark was an example of media bias against the Catholic Church in Ireland.
Classic Ray Darcy. Heād never be one to make the running on something like this because heās too much of a coward. However you could be sure that once it was blatantly obvious that the tide of public opinion had turned Ray would row in with an opinion that would have been controversial if it had been made 15 years ago.
+1 Thinking of going to mass on Sunday after this. That sap should be condemned from the pulpit in all churches at the weekend and anyone who listens to his show should be excommunicated.
Heard he was as much a pain in the hole back then as he is now. Only time Iāve ever come across him was years ago where he was pissed in Ri Ra and was leering rather immaturely at women in his vicinity. Even though he was famous, they were running a mile which I suppose is why he ended up with a fat munter.
