I like the Educate Together ethos, but if you want the children to do first holy communion, you may have to bring them to a parish sacramental preparation programme every week after school and pay at least €5 for the privilege of it. Some ET schools can do it in-house, depends which diocese you are resident in. ET has a very good ethical and religious education programme, the children learn about and celebrate all the major faiths.

There’s a lot of parental involvement in the ET model as well, but what I remember from my time working there was the row at Christmas. The pagans complaining about the absence of a Christmas tree then the Jehovah’s Witness parents horrified that it was a massive pagan symbol when I put up a small one in new room.

Think long- term as well, there are still some voluntary secondary schools that don’t take in ET children and there has been no debate about this school places issue at all. The fact that the one school that we wanted our son to go to had never taken in a child from an ETNS was the single thing that finally made up our minds.

Apply to all the local schools and keep your options open…

I’d rather send my child to a bogball playing school with limited subject options and rosy cheeked principle than some pinko community school with the kids playing non competitive badminton and holding mindfulness sessions at lunch time.

I’ve a customer who’s a fourth dan karate master/guru/something. He’s in his late fifties, his kid is 12 and already a black belt. Fine people, nice way with them and the father would entertain you for hours talking about the philosophy of karate, the great masters he’s studied with etc.
I asked him to take my two kids for private lessons during summer holidays, mainly for the benefit of my autistic son, who has disastrous co-ordination and little interest in anything apart from minecraft and sonic.
The first lesson was a week ago. I took part and stumbled around like a fool. My daughter really took to it, she concentrated, remembered the instructions and spent the week practicing stances, kicks and punches.
Second lesson today. The boy child lasted the hour without rebellion or complaint. I stumbled around like a fool. My daughter just about broke my left ring finger with a kick. She’s still grinning twelve hours later. Just as well I have little use for it.
Where did it all go wrong.
