Any of you lot ever have a newborn with bad reflux?

Its a fucking nightmare. Must have had to change our babys clothes 4 times overnight. Not to mind all the crying and general irritation. Poor wife is getting zero sleep.

Any old wives tales etc welcome

Breastfeeding. If that is what you are asking?

we had an issue with that but it was really obvious there was a problem. Constant stomach problems and blood in nappies. Reflux itself wasnt an issue, took the milk fine and settled fine, but afterwards was a disaster. Took them over 6 months to properly diagnose it too after multiple hospital stays and trips to Crumlin too. Ended up on formula that cost over ā‚¬50 per can and was half the size of the normal formula cans. One monthly order in the height of feeding cost somewhere over ā‚¬900. Luckily it was covered under the drug payment scheme. Neocate I think it was called.

Kid is fine now, after about 16 months weaned back onto milk to see if it was ok again and it was. No intolerance at all now.

Thanks. Wife is breastfeeding and doesnā€™t want to go pumping expressed milk unless she really has to. Pumping plus reflux could be even more non stop and less sleep

Weā€™ve a 23 month old also so our hands are full as it is.

yeah the reason I asked because if it was formula the first thing youā€™d do is change the formula. Canā€™t do that with breast milk obviously.

Keep the baby upright for a bit longer after a feed and stop regularly for a burping. Not much else you can do fella

I adjusted the moses basket so it sloped slightly from head to foot, only about an inch, this helped keep the feed down

#UsToo @Phil_Leotardo.

Our chap had silent reflux. He couldnā€™t settle sleeping on his back and was constantly coughing and sometimes choking. Very frightening for new parents, maybe any parents. He was in serious discomfort in the cot.

We were afraid to let him sleep on his tummy due to cot death warnings so he slept upright in our arms on the couch. I did until 1am, my life partner did from 1am-6am (as she was on maternity leave so wasnā€™t busy), Iā€™d take over from 6am-8am and watch Everybody Loves Raymond, Frasier etc on More 4 and sheā€™d sub back in then to allow me to go to work.

The fact my posting output wasnā€™t adversely affected during this time is a tribute to me. We also had a week with him in Temple Street as they wanted to rule out underlying organ issues and to ensure he was still getting oxygen when he was having his coughing/choking episodes.

Lots of trials of different bottles, formula, drops, medication, formula thickener before we hit upon a mix that gave him some relief, and it gets better as they get bigger/stronger in any case. Not sure what tactics to employ in a breastfeeding situation though.

When your wife starts using the breast pump make sure to sneak up behind her and make a loud mooing noise. New mothers love that so they do.

Herself was a bit down in the dumps over the young lads exam results, but following kind and excellent advice from @fenwaypark, we didnā€™t say much, just told him to try at least doing twenty minutes study in the evening.
Anyhow, she got back on Tuesday saying it could be worse, one of her colleagues, who has an ulster unionist for a husband, wandered into her 14 year old lads bedroom on Saturday with an armful of laundry, about to head out for the night, to be met with ā€œoh, by the way mum, Iā€™m gay, Iā€™ve already texted my sisterā€
We were chatting in the bathroom about it, and she then said that she had read that 50% of teenage boys in single sex schools had feelings of attraction towards fellow pupils at some stage, and sheā€™d told her pal that it may not be set in stone yet.
I replied ā€œunless heā€™s sucked some lads cockā€ (as a joke) ā€œitā€™s fairly set in stone thenā€
She duly told me I was puerile and had no empathy, when we heard hooting with laughter outside the door. My young lad had been listening to the entire conversation, and had actually thought we were discussing him.
Itā€™s so far from anything I could ever dream of hearing my parents ever discuss, or my oul fella say Iā€™m a bit embarrassed tbh.
