Dublin, Tipp, Wexford, Cavan
No Iâm just pro-bicycle and anti-car.
One thing thatâs bugging me right now is the following:
Which two counties that DO NOT border each order come the closest to doing so in terms of shortest distance between nearest points as the crow flies.
For the purposes of this question Iâm ruling out two possible options.
One is the âdoes Down border Louthâ question. There is currently no land crossing between Down and Louth. A bridge between Omeath and Warrenpoint is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in 2027, so 2029. For me, Geoff, Down does border Louth because the water they are separated by is what we would refer to as a river.
The other question is does Kerry border Clare. For me, Geoff, no it doesnât, because itâs separated by what I would call an estuary rather than a river.
What I am looking for is the shortest non-coastal point that separates two counties that do not border each other.
Contenders for this prestigious title I would think are Cavan and Louth, Meath and Longford, Kildare and Westmeath, possibly Limerick and Waterford?
I would never have considered Clare and Kerry sharing a border. If you have to take a ferry to cross the two then it isnât close enough
Thatâs what he says. I donât think anyone would say they share a border ?
Donegal and Sligo
I did it out yesterday on the Googles and I believe this is indeed the case, the nearest points in each county being three kilometres point something apart.
Cavan and Louth are 4.60 kilometres apart in a straight line, edging out Meath and Longford who are 4.69 kilometres apart.
Limerick and Waterford very close
It would be in the UEFA Cup spots. 10 point something km apart.
Actually Armagh and Antrim could be the winner of this title. My understanding is Down has a tiny shoreline on Lough Neagh, which would mean Armagh and Antrim cannot border each other.
The Googles doesnât carry county boundaries for the wee six however and the institutional make up of Norn Iron deliberately tries to overlook counties because theyâre too associated with the GAA and you canât be having that, instead being made up of âboroughsâ.
So itâs difficult to pin this one down.
Not sure if this is new but thereâs now a daily 15 question quiz on the RTE website. Itâs tricky enough. Been getting around 11/12 the days Iâve done it.
