All the swimming heats in the Olympics are grouped by time / ability to try and keep the field close together. It’s why Mona Maguire won her heat but still didn’t qualify.
Different gravy altogether and he moved up from light-heavy after winning the gold for that in Rio.

This pentathlon event is the perfect way to be an Olympian. There’s no jeopardy, there’s no training for five years to get eliminated after a dodgy false start. It’s like a transition year adventure weekend away, you get to do all manner of sports, and all of the competitors are shit at all of them.
