Iâm going to resist the urge to have a dig at your alleged music snobbery and say that I find a lot of the best comedy to take on a superficially condescending tone. Stewart Lee is the best stand up in the UK or Ireland today and he brilliantly employs a form of condescending superiority for comic effect. So did Chris Morris in Brass Eye, and Armando Iannucci in almost anything heâs ever done.
What I think youâre getting at with python is the sense of self-satisfaction that seems to pour out of everything they do. I think thatâs more because they were very much on the fringe and were very much taking a radical approach to comedy that had bever been done before and as such it was truly âtheirsâ. They were unique and they knew it, so a lot of it seems like smug in-jokes to people watching it today.
Youâre right about comedy being a matter of taste but at the same time, look at how many people simply donât âgetâ the office. I know plenty of people who donât understand whatâs funny about curb your enthusiasm, or why seinfeld was revolutionary. You probably notice yourself that heaps of people donât seem to know the difference between old and new simpsons episodes. Yes a certain amount of it is taste, but a lot of it is understanding what the joke is and appreciating novelty or subtle, subversive humour. This is a general point by the way, not talking about python.
You say you are resisting the urge to have a dig and on the other hand say that it is alleged snobbery.
Anyway, most people I speak tend to realise that the Simpsons has gone to shite. Personally speaking I never saw Seinfeld as revolutionary but there you go. I adopt a similar attitude to comedy as I do to music - if it makes me laugh I like just like if music is easy on the ear. I am not necessarily looking for smartness or difference just for the sake of it.
big time- some funny stuff but the amount of shit you have to sit through to find something funny isnt worth it
another comedian who is shit is stewart lee- saw one or two of his jokes & thought he was ok but went to his show- absoltute tripe- a comedians job is to be funny not to try & lecture people how to save the planet - crowd was full of geeky college kids who probably never get laid & think saving algae in the amazon is worth shouting about
To be brutally honest the whole Irish team is over-rated and has been for years now. One paltry grand slam when France couldnât give a shit and England were at an all time low is a fairly patethic return for this self proclaimed âGolden generationâ and even then Jones kick came within inches of that not even happening. On top of all this theyâve had the use of Croke Park for years now and completely wasted it.
Ref is doing his best for Ireland today as well, lucky to be ahead.
You know what i think is comedic? How actually full of shit and stuck up your own arse you are. Has it ever crossed your mind that there are different types of comedy for different types of people. Liking Seinfeld doesnât mean your smarter than someone who loves slap stick american teen comedy. Some people donât want to be intellectually challenged while watching a tv show, this doesnât make them less intelligent than anyone else.
Completely overrated, their stuff shouldnât even be played on radio and as for their wacky album titles like âFight Like Apes and the Mystery of the Golden Medallionâ and âThe Body of Christ, the legs of Tina Turnerâ. Fuck off. Youâd hear better off teenagers tuning up in Eamonn Doranâs.
