Yes but Syria is of way more strategic importance to Russia/Putin than Libya or Iraq. Given that the yanks reckon they are now self sufficient oil wise, Libya and Iraq are now no more than a cosmetic interest. Syria has the potential to reignite a cold war given its geographical location.
