Was in Tower there today at 9. Nerd central. The corporates are taking over this event. Poor enough selection for non Springsteen fans.
Picked up a Mastodon picture 12" featuring Butthole Surfers front man Gibby Haines, two Sun Ra Lps and an Aphex Twin 12" that wasn’t part of the RSD promotion.
Not technically arecord store but anyway…a mate posted this on Facebook during the week. Talk about hitting the jackpot.

Tower records was thronged at 8.45 this morning. Mood - Ugly, as punters crowded over each other to get at ultra limited editions. One fella in particular was like a bastard. The one record he had come in for, Tower only had one of and he couldn’t find it and he seemed to think it was the shop assistants fault. I was flicking through a rack and next thing this cunt leans over me and starts stopping me flicking. He’s lucky I didn’t grab him by the hair and drag him out of the shop.
Anyway I’m in the queue to pay with a reasonable haul having got the one record I really wanted and a few other interesting ones. There’s a French lad in front of me and he hands a single to Brian who used to be in the Gorehounds and own Comet records and now works in Tower. It’s the secret single says Brian. Do you know who is on it he says. The secret single is the holy grail of RSD. An ultra limited single. I wouldn’t even have bothered looking for it having come into the shop about 45 minutes after it opened. Brian is very excited and says it’s the Melvins on one side and MC5 on the other. Fuck it says I to myself. Anyway the French chap gives a Gallic shrug and says I zont want eet. Hey, hey, Brian give it here I says quick give it to me. And I paid for it not really believing my luck.
Bump.
Had BBC radio 6 on in background this morning and Maconie and Radcliffes show was about it /lack of it
Is Brian a really skinny guy with a red tinge running through his hair? Looks like a smoker?
That’s Brian alright. Brian O’Kelly. He played the drums for psychobilly band the Gorehounds back in the 80s. He also owned Comet records behind the Central Bank which was a very good independent record store back in the day. I’d say he had a very interesting 1980s.
I remember Comet - it’s graffitied outside walls looked great beside the Central Bank in serious news clips.
I spent most of my disposable income there for a few years.
You must have few real gems in your collection?
Freebird records at O’Connell Bridge was also a good one.
I do indeed.
Freebird was originally on Grafton Street upstairs over the bus stop newsagents at the bottom of the Street. It was a lovely bright shop. A typical lunchtime for me would involve stopping into Freebird, Comet and the record shop beside the fishing tackle shop in Temple Bar, Borderline Records. That circuit sometimes included Abbey Discs for the dance stuff and the original Tower in Wicklow Street.
There’s a short hour-long Nationwide type of documentary waiting to be filmed called “Following Fagan” as the camera details the movements of our hero stretching to the present day.
Lord have mercy on his soul but I’ve a vision of Paddy “Pecker” Dunne as Fagan.
Abbey discs was a right little spot. Wasn’t it in the old abbey mall - later to become epicurean food hall? Freebird moved to Eden quay - they used to have a slogan something like there’s two types of music - good and bad. We sell good. Bought a few Stone Roses 12”s In there. There was another spot on Wicklow st across from Louis Copeland’s.
Beside Louis Copeland’s. Down a corridor. Secret Book Store with a Freebird Records tacked on. It’s still there. I head in there usually if I have time to spare around the area.
Not a bad shop either. Spindizzy, Rage and All City are honourable mentions too.
Was there a spot in the George’s Arcade as well? I think it’s still there.
