The Rugby Thread (Part 1)

Why have they introduced this rule at all? Why isn’t the eligibility based simply on citizenship?

Are citizenship rules uniform the world over? I dont know

Was that an attempt at a response or what?

It was a pretty straightforward question I thought, one i dont know the answer to. Without knowing the answer its hard to say if your proposal re citizenship has merit or not.

If it takes 1 year to become a citizen in the UK and 10 in New Zealand it is a factor

:joy: :joy: :joy:

So what do you think should deem you as eligible for any sport in the world?

They’ve changed the rules, just like almost every other sport has worldwide along the way.

If you think Citizenship is the way then fine - but you realise some countries can just give you citizenship. FIFA changed their rules because Qatar and Togo were trying to bring in Brazilians to play for them.

Do you also realise that some have a naturalization period of the same or less than the 3 years previously there for World Rugby?

Citizenship is arbitrary by nation- you have to come up with one rule for all in sports outside of that.

This is Glas we are talking about, his debate style is asking a question and then running off.

After his “Dublin’s mental weakness” meltdown the other day it’s a testament to his delusion that he’s back as strident and stroppy as ever :joy::joy:

For all their demonstrable strengths, mental strength is not to the fore.

So you’re not going to answer my question as to why they brought in the rule so? It was a simple enough question.

Is it to give weaker countries a leg up by being able to select from the second rate players of strong countries.

You’re prepared to die in any ditch you dig - I’ll give you that :joy::joy::joy:

what prompted the citizenship debate? Have they stopped allowing foreign nationals playing for any old country ?

Will you answer mine above please. I asked you a civil question

The one where you replied to my question with a question was it? Each country sets its own rules for citizenship. Why did the rugby crowd introduce the mercenary rule instead of just going with citizenship?

2 questions. The riddler has fuck all on you

Id imagine for that exact reason, that every country sets its own citizenship rules. Fwiw Id have no problem going with citizenship. But some less scrupulous nations would definitely try and manipulate it

And I answered your question with a question because I didnt know something and wanted to understand your point. You’re very tetchy and defensive

You didn’t ask that question, you asked this;

I stated sports change their eligibility rules all the time.

I then explained why citizenship is not a smart way to do it.

I don’t understand what you mean about weaker countries?

Why did soccer stop it being for citizenship alone?

You asked a stupid question and are now avoiding the answer.

Fun fact for you Tim apropos of nothing

One of the earliest ‘project players’ was a fella called Joe Mckenna. He was from Ofally and played intercounty hurling with them and he ‘got a job’ in Limerick and transferred to Limerick. He was one of the powerhouses of a Limerick side who won the AI in 1973 bridging a 33 year gap back to 1940. A shrewd investment by their county board
