The Rugby Thread (Part 1)

You said it’s too short. It isn’t. Three years id a lot. Plenty of Irish project players around the world doing it. Old team mate of mine shane o Leary is playing for Canada.

I bet he’d much prefer to be playing for Ireland, but shur yknow, project players.

Two wrongs don’t make a right mate. It’s wrong everywhere. Three years is too short. It is there entirely to facilitate this mercenary country picking, and fuck the lads who have also played their entire lives through a system in which “three years is a long time”

Thats why they have changed it to five years

And many other tier one nations

And why Munster are now recruiting 18 year olds from South Africa instead of waiting til they reach their 20s.

That’s just nonsense. It is what it is. The world is a smaller place now and nationality is a thing of the past. I’d much prefer a lad coming and living/working here for three years as opposed to somebody representing the Irish soccer team who lives and works in England they are entire life and only play for Ireland because they aren’t good enough.

That’s too long. Pro rugby careers are going to get shorter.

One year!?

If each country decides it’ll be abused. Having a set period for every country is surely the only fair way?

Is there a standard term for citizenship or is it up to individual countries to decide? Thats wide open to abuse surely

If you’ve answered this already let me know. I know I’ve asked it 2 or 3 times.

I suspect we won’t here from him again.

Hes normally a grand fella to deal with iv no beef at all with @glasagusban tbh.

If that is your view, and it’s a perfectly valid one, then international competition is pointless. This is a valid viewpoint also, as are immigration limits etc etc.

I know mate. Five years is better than three, but it doesn’t seem to be long enough to stymie the “project player” system, so, is not long enough

Agree 100%. I have stated this repeatedly. It goes all the way down.
My lass is a decent netball player, but her team isn’t great. Three or four of the best players left for other clubs, and she was asked, but we absolutely repelled it. You stand and fight and succeed or fail with what you’ve got, or all competition is pointless.

I think it will completely kill it off. Benefit wont wash through for year or two as anyone already in system was exempt from 5 years i.e. jean kleyn

Netball isn’t a sport in fairness.

Neither is rubby.

You’d wonder why anyone would get worked up about these pursuits?
