The Rugby Thread (Part 1)

I’d have said the same til I watched it. It’s not bad to watch tbh. Better than epl anyway. Not sure I’d watch it as a neutral, and when herself is playing I get a bit too anxious to enjoy it fully, but it’s great to play some kind of team thing, and even the younger teenage girls are really good. My lass is only ten yet and it’s still getting there. Rules are bizarre.

Netball is a great sport. Basically basketball for people who aren’t freakishly tall. Very tough on the joints though.

There is lads spend every waking hour thinking abiut the rubby and they saying they dont like it dont folly it and dont think its a sport. Bizarre behaviour

Would you often take a break from loading the vending machine in the local girls school to watch a game of it???

What do you mean? It was a rule brought in apart of overall eligibility rules. Part of that was to stop players representing two countries in the sport- something you can do in soccer still.

Most sports have a period of time someone has to be in residence somewhere. If you bothered to read the link on the issue of “citizenship”, you’ll see that’s FIFA put in a two year rule at the time.

The thinking behind 3 years- who knows? Some countries like Canada award citizenship after that time. In rugby traditionally a long contract is two years and 3 would mean you at least played for two contracted period in a country, adding risks. A big problem with the law that was hindsight calling was the relative value of currencies making the SH very uncompetitive with the NH. That made it desirable for SH players to come north younger and earlier to make coin.

Fair enough the rule was changed - imo it should have been to 4 years and not 5 but that’s the way it goes.

Most rugby contracts were one year traditionally or two at most.

Flatty what rep rules do you like?

In cricket recently you just had the World Cup winning captain playing for his second nation.

In soccer recently you had the ROI lose a granny rule player after playing a senior match for them.

In rugby league players regularly move between nations. You also have had Kiwis who won’t play for NZ so they can play State of Origin football.

I could go on.

What’s the sports that you’re least miserable about generally Flatty?

Netball

Citizenship is up to individual countries. Were individual countries abusing this in rubby before the three year project player rule? What was the rule beforehand? I’m still no closer to finding out the reasoning for this rule being introduced in the first place.

I gave you a reason, you choose not to acknowledge that.

Don’t fret, I’m far from miserable mate The only sport that makes me miserable is when my club loses.
Its a matter of degrees. I long said I’d rather Ireland played FAI players than went scouting granny rights in soccer, and then sulking when English born and bred lads opted to throw their hat in the ring with England. Irish rugby pisses me off more, because the incomers are no better than lads getting shunted aside.
It seems to vex you more than me all of this.
I find it hard to support an Irish rugby team with imports of convenience, when there are fine players dropped to make way for them. I’d say this of any international team. The all blacks are worse if anything, but that’s just whataboutery.

NZ
Wales
Ireland
England

Oz

You are miserable.

Every international sport has holes in eligibility rules.

I’m not sure what you’re on about regarding being vexed. I’ve explained the eligibility rules and that they are changing.

Yourself (an immigrant) seems to dislike them playing for a country. Maybe it is to do with your own self loathing for being in a country you despise.

If New Zealand are at it then Ireland should not feel guilty for hiring mercenaries. I would also hope that said mercenaries would choose a better song than the Rose of Tralee as the “Irish” national anthem.

I do seem to be playing on your mind mate. :grimacing:

Id say it was introduced to stem the wholesale pillaging of the island nations and the abuse of the system in the NH is an unintended consequence of same. Id say they decided on three years to deal with various different citizenship rules.

The SH nations were most affected by this, they are also most powerful voices in rugby historically. Why do you think they introduced the rules? I dont think the IRFU had enough power to drive through this rule so that they could nab quin roux

And thats fine too. You should let this be your last word on the matter and we will note you down as a conscientious objector. I applaud your principled stance

The last refuge of a beaten man.

Wankers… I had to go and google it… So Ireland capped another South African player? Bit much alright…whats going on with the vast sums being spent at academies? So drug fuelled south African comes in and wipes out 5 years you’ve given of your life.

That’s a reasonable enough response. God knows why I had to ask about four times or what Tim was shiteing on about.
